This role partners with Product Owners, UW/Config, QA, and Implementation teams to deliver secure, reliable, and maintainable capabilities for a high-availability, high-volume automated life insurance underwriting platform.
This is a senior individual contributor role with no formal people management responsibility; leadership is exercised through technical influence, architecture and design stewardship, high-quality implementation, and mentoring of engineers while maintaining hands-on delivery ownership.
Responsibilities- Own technical delivery for medium-to-large initiatives across multiple components/services.
- Lead architecture and design decisions for backend/service-oriented solutions, including performance, maintainability, security, and operability trade-offs.
- Influence technical direction and engineering practices across teams without formal authority using clear design artifacts, code reviews, and evidence-based recommendations.
- Contribute meaningfully to implementation and test automation efforts, including unit, integration, and regression coverage.
- Use CI/CD pipelines and enforce quality gates including peer review, linting/static checks, security checks, and automated tests before release.
- Produce and maintain project, system, and testing documentation, including runbooks and known-issue notes.
- Participate in sprint planning, refinement, demos, and daily scrum to communicate progress and unblock impediments.
- Partner with implementation and business teams to support client onboarding and integration activities.
- Participate in rotating production support and incident response, including leading diagnosis and coordination for complex incidents and driving corrective/preventive improvements.
- Implement and improve observability practices (structured logging, tracing, diagnostics, and actionable alerts).
- Participate in controls compliance and auditing activities and adhere to SCOR information security policies and best practices, including PII handling, secrets management, and required security training.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of SDLC standards, tooling, and team effectiveness.
- Model and encourage responsible AI-assisted development practices for coding, debugging, testing, and documentation.

- A bachelor’s degree in information services management, computer science, applied mathematics, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years of software engineering experience in Agile delivery environments.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver reliable software in high-availability, high-volume service ecosystems.
- Strong expertise with Java and service-oriented backend development, including REST APIs, data persistence, and SQL against complex data models.
- Demonstrated experience with modern engineering workflows and tooling, including source control, issue tracking, CI/CD, code review, and automated testing.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical design and implementation for complex features spanning multiple services/components.
- Demonstrated ability to influence peers and partner teams through technical credibility, communication, and collaborative execution.
- Demonstrated mentoring/coaching of engineers through design and code feedback.
- Strong analytical problem-solving, verbal/written communication, and stakeholder collaboration skills.
- Ability to operate with high autonomy, proactively identify risks, propose mitigations, and drive work to completion.
- Cloud-hosted systems and operational tooling (compute, storage, queues, metrics/logging).
- Observability tooling.
- Cross-team technical lead experience.
Insurance/re-insurance domain knowledge.

- Scope: Owns technical delivery for large initiatives with cross-service and cross-team impact.
- Complexity: Solves ambiguous, multi-system problems with clear trade-off decisions across performance, maintainability, security, and delivery speed.
- Autonomy: Executes independently with minimal day-to-day direction while maintaining transparent stakeholder communication.
- Influence: Raises engineering standards and aligns teams through design quality, code review, and technical leadership without formal people-management authority.

Pay Range for roles performed in NC: $120,000-$160,000 base salary per year. Actual salaries may vary based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, role and performance. The range listed is just one component of SCOR's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, short- and long term incentives.
