Position Overview:

Provides enterprise leadership to translate Sutter Health strategy and operating unit direction into integrated, healthcare specific protective services and workplace violence prevention programs. Ensures a coordinated system approach while tailoring implementation to affiliate operations, risk profiles, and culture.
Directs the effective alignment of people, technology, and processes, including incident reporting and analysis, investigations, training, threat and violence management, and performance measurement, to reduce violence risk and safeguard patients, workforce members, visitors, property, and organizational interests. Accountable for oversight of workplace violence prevention and related protective services activities within the assigned scope.

EDUCATION:
Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.

  • Bachelor's: Criminal Justice or related field

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

  • 12 years recent relevant experience.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated ownership of enterprise or multi‑facility healthcare WPV programs, with accountability for policy, standards, training, incident review, and performance improvement.

  • Proven experience addressing patient‑driven violence (e.g., behavioral health, substance use, altered mental status, high‑acuity care), beyond employee relations or corporate threat programs.

  • Direct collaboration with clinical leaders (Nursing, Medical Staff, Behavioral Health, Emergency Medicine) to implement operationally practical violence prevention strategies at the frontline.

  • Hands‑on experience supporting Joint Commission workplace violence standards and OSHA/Cal‑OSHA expectations, including regulatory readiness and post‑incident corrective action.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Solid expertise in formal/structured security risk assessment methodology, including the ability to mitigate risk by synchronizing the efforts and capabilities of people, process, and technology.

  • In-depth knowledge of building security staffing models; developing post/patrol strategies; effectively applying security technologies; and coherently blending all program elements with tailored processes to effectively manage risk within a clinical environment.

  • Understanding of the business impact of security tools, technologies, and policies.

  • Broad working knowledge of health care operations and their related security requirements including, but not limited to, hospitals, clinics, medical offices, and their protective services needs.

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of current and emerging physical security trends, risks, threats, countermeasures, vulnerabilities, and mitigations ranging across the spectrum from workplace violence to terrorism to loss prevention to behavioral challenges.

  • Written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to give presentations and translate complex concepts into business and clinician relatable language.

Pay Range is $161,616.00 to $258,585.60 / annual salary

The compensation range may vary based on the geographic location where the position is filled. Total compensation considers multiple factors, including, but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, departmental equity, training, and organizational needs. Base pay is only one component of Sutter Health’s comprehensive total rewards program. Eligible positions also include a comprehensive benefits package.
