The Role
At Klaviyo, we value the unique backgrounds, experiences and perspectives each Klaviyo (we call ourselves Klaviyos) brings to our workplace each and every day. At Klaviyo, our UX Design Team is a multidisciplinary group of Product Designers, Researchers, Content Strategists, and Design Systems specialists. We take a deeply collaborative and human-centered approach to building powerful, data-driven tools that help our customers grow their businesses.
Our design philosophy is grounded in clarity, empathy, and utility-and we're proud of the way we transform complex data and machine learning outputs into intuitive, actionable experiences for users. You will be working globally with a team currently based across the US from the East to West Coasts. Please note that this is a hybrid role located in our Boston office that requires 3 days/week onsite. Fully remote candidates will not be considered at this time.
About the role:
The Director of Design is a catalyst for product innovation, customer value, and sustainable business growth. This role is ideal for a design leader who operates at the intersection of user experience, data, product strategy, and growth experimentation. Balancing strategic thinking with hands-on design work, you will guide your team through every stage of the design process.
In this role, you will actively participate in designing experiences that drive user acquisition, activation, retention, and expansion-contributing directly to projects when needed and leading by example in both your craft and strategic thinking. You will work closely with Product, Engineering, and Marketing to identify opportunities that improve key growth metrics, and deliver design solutions that support scalable, self-serve, and product-led user journeys.
Ensuring alignment and clarity between design and other teams will be crucial. You'll also support your team in navigating complex challenges while fostering a culture of continuous learning, experimentation, and performance.
How you'll have an impact:
  • Lead growth-focused design initiatives that influence key metrics across the user journey-including acquisition, onboarding, engagement, and retention.
  • Lead strategic efforts across discovery, ideation, and delivery-ensuring we craft solutions that are both technically feasible and deeply human.
  • Act as a key design partner to Product and Engineering leadership, advocating for the user and translating business and growth strategies into elegant, data-informed design execution.
  • Drive the design of scalable, intuitive self-serve experiences that enable product-led growth across user segments.
  • Champion cross-functional alignment by ensuring that insights, frameworks, and best practices developed in one part of the product can scale and influence the broader experience.
  • Promote a culture of experimentation and iteration-using A/B testing, funnel analysis, and behavioral insights to inform design decisions.
  • Drive continuous improvement through design reviews, mentorship, and thoughtful feedback-ensuring high standards in usability, accessibility, and visual craft.

What you'll need:
  • 10+ years of experience designing user-facing digital products, ideally at scale.
  • 5+ years in a design leadership role, with experience managing managers and senior ICs.
  • A track record of building and leading diverse, high-performing teams through periods of growth and change.
  • Experience contributing to or leading product-led growth initiatives (e.g., onboarding, in-product education, feature adoption, upsell paths).
  • Strong design sensibilities and the ability to dive into ambiguity to bring clarity and direction.
  • Experience working on complex product ecosystems and collaborating across multiple domains (Product, Engineering, Data, etc.).
  • User-focused mindset, driven by data and research to identify and solve real member problems.
  • Proven track record of fostering a culture of experimentation, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills to align cross-functional teams.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, risk, and change.
