This position is responsible for leading, developing, and coordinating the operation of Pharmacy Services. The Director of Pharmacy Services shall develop services that provide and enhance quality patient care while promoting fiscal responsibility in the utilization of resources. Within the scope of budget responsibilities, the Director of Pharmacy Services shall direct the activities that provide for the purchasing, receiving, storage, delivery and distribution of medications from the pharmacy. The incumbent will be responsible for the regulatory compliance of the department. The Director of Pharmacy Services shall plan, direct, monitor, and evaluate the provision of distributive and clinical pharmacy services to all patient care areas.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to): 

  • Responsible for all routine operations of the Department of Pharmacy Services Develops programs, goals and objectives consistent with those of the organizations overall strategic plan. 

  • Develops operational and capital budgets consistent with Mount Auburn Hospital and BILH System, and manages operating expenses and key indicators within the budget Develops, implements, coordinates, monitors, evaluates and integrates pharmacy services that contribute to the overall success and financial viability of pharmacy services Uses creativity in the delivery of services and products in a highly competitive market. 

  • Provides appropriate pharmacy representation on hospital and medical staff committees Serves as a professional resource for Physicians, Clinical Staff and Administration Collaborates with Medical Staff and Clinical Staff regarding pharmacy programs and services. 

  • Defines and resolves issues with the medication distribution system and continually evaluates performance relative to need for improvement of processes to assure the safe and appropriate delivery of medications to all patient care areas Plans, supports and leads Quality Improvement efforts for relevant pharmacy services. 

  • Manages human resources by recruiting, selecting, hiring and orienting qualified candidates Evaluates staff performance in an accurate, consistent, objective, and timely manner Develops core position hiring strategies and ensures opportunities for professional development Creates a cohesive pharmacy team committed to providing distributive, clinical, and service quality to all customers. 

  • Develops and monitors departmental policies and procedures Ensures compliance with state and federal regulatory agency standards. 

  • Strives to improve patient safety in all aspects of performance of the above essential functions, reports/documents medication errors and attends safety in-services, when appropriate.   

  • All other assigned duties related to position.  

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires current pharmacy licensure in the State of Massachusetts, a degree in Pharmacy (advanced degree preferred) from an accredited College of Pharmacy 

  • A minimum of one-year pharmacy management experience 

  • Must possess good organizational and computer skills. 

  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills for interfacing with all levels of staff, Physicians and other contacts.

1-7. Requires independent thinking, excellent communication, listening, writing, public speaking and analytical skills Must be able to communicate effectively with all educational levels and with a variety of professional disciplines Must be able to deal with stress and function independently Requires strong organizational, operational, and time management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously Requires periods of prolonged sitting, standing, walking, and when necessary, travel Work is generally performed in an office environment.

 

EQUIPMENT USED: 

1-7. Personal computer, LAN networked computer systems, telephone, fax, copy machines, calculator, audio-visual equipment, typewriter, pagers, PDA’s and medication dispensing systems. 

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS: 

Supports and exhibits behavior consistent with the philosophy and values of BILH Performs other related duties as assigned Assumes accountability for special projects as assigned. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This position provides direct and indirect supervision to Pharmacy Manager/Supervisor, Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator, Clinical Pharmacists, Pharmacy Residents, Staff Pharmacists, Pharmacy Interns, Pharmacy Supply Coordinator, Pharmacy Technicians and Secretary/Clerk. 

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY: 

This position reports directly to the BILH SVP & Chief Pharmacy Officer and designated administrative position within the facility The Department of Pharmacy Services maintains necessary inventory to meet the medication needs of the diverse patient population served by the hospital The department participates in all aspects of medication use including (1) selection, procurement and storage, (2) ordering or prescribing, (3) dispensing, (4) administering, and (5) monitoring of all medications utilized The Director of Pharmacy Services is accountable for an effective departmental operation within budgetary constraints through the monitoring, projecting and controlling expenses, and through the promotion of rational, cost-effective utilization of medication therapy. 

 

Internal contacts include Administrators, Physicians, Nursing Directors, Department Directors and other health care team members for the purpose of integrating services, improving patient care, ensuring effective communication systems and facilitating decision making in clinical practice issues. 

 

External contacts include patient and families regarding patient care issues; physicians regarding patient care and program development; JCAHO, MA State Board of Pharmacy, MA DPH, HRSA, other state and federal agencies regarding compliance with rules and regulations; educational institutions, local, state and national professional pharmacy organizations for the purpose of exchanging professional and program information; peers in other facilities to exchange and share information as it relates to the provision of pharmacy services; pharmaceutical representatives regarding contracts and medical products.

Pay Range:

$195,000.00 USD - $213,990.40 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
