Job Summary

The Director of Nursing Services (DON) oversees all clinical operations within the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), ensuring high‑quality resident care, regulatory compliance, and strong clinical outcomes. This role is responsible for planning, organizing, developing, and directing the Nursing Department in alignment with state, federal, and facility standards. The DON provides strategic leadership to nursing staff, drives quality improvement initiatives, and ensures that resident care is delivered safely, efficiently, and compassionately. This position is ideal for an experienced RN leader with a strong background in SNF operations, survey readiness, staffing management, and clinical excellence.

• Current and valid statespecific Registered Nurse (RN) license

• Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience as a DON or ADON in a Skilled Nursing Facility

• Strong knowledge of state and federal longterm care regulations

• Experience with survey readiness, Plans of Correction (POCs), and quality improvement

• Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor, and develop nursing staff

• Ability to read, write, and speak the English language

 

Essential Functions

Clinical Leadership & Resident Care

• Provide overall clinical leadership to ensure highquality resident care, regulatory compliance, and strong clinical outcomes

• Oversee, direct, and support nursing staff in the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care

• Oversee the comprehensive care planning process and ensure interdisciplinary coordination

• Uphold resident rights, including dignity, privacy, informed consent, and safety

• Ensure timely communication with physicians, families, and responsible parties regarding significant changes in condition

• Participate in preadmission assessments and approve admissions in coordination with the Administrator

 

Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness

• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations governing SNF operations

• Lead regulatory surveys, complaint investigations, and Plans of Correction (POCs)

• Maintain continuous readiness for unannounced surveys and regulatory visits

• Ensure timely corrective actions for survey deficiencies and grievances

• Maintain compliance with health, fire, safety, sanitation, OSHA, and disasterpreparedness standards

 

Infection Prevention & Safety

• Oversee the Infection Preventionist and Infection Control Program, including surveillance, reporting, and staff education

• Ensure compliance with antibiotic stewardship requirements

• Participate in emergency preparedness planning, drills, and response activities

• Ensure nursing staff readiness for disasters, evacuations, and emergency events

 

Quality Assurance & Risk Management

• Monitor clinical quality indicators (falls, pressure injuries, infections, hospitalizations)

• Implement corrective actions to reduce clinical risk and improve outcomes

• Support the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Quality Assurance Program

• Serve on committees including Quality Assurance, Infection Control, Patient Care, Safety, and Pharmaceutical Services

 

Staff Leadership, Training & Workforce Management

• Lead recruitment, hiring, evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions for nursing personnel

• Ensure nursing staff orientation, ongoing education, annual competencies, and scopeofpractice compliance for LVNs, CNAs, and Medication Aides

• Develop and maintain nursing schedules based on acuity, census, and staffing standards

• Provide clinical consultation and support to the Administrator and facility leadership team

• Maintain 24/7 responsibility for nursing operations and assume Administrator duties when delegated

 

Documentation, Communication & Administrative Oversight

• Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation across the Nursing Department

• Ensure all incidents and accidents are documented and reported per policy and regulation

• Maintain inventories of medications, supplies, and clinical equipment

• Participate in facility marketing efforts and community engagement

• Perform other essential functions as assigned
