Illumina's Director, On-Market Portfolio Leader, reports into the Head of R&D Strategy and Portfolio and is responsible for driving the performance, quality, lifecycle management, and strategic evolution of Illumina's on-market products, ensuring that investments are aligned with organizational objectives and customer needs. This role leads governance, prioritization, and execution across the on-market portfolio, balancing customer impact, product quality, compliance, business objectives, and return on investment. The Director serves as a key partner across Development, Quality, Operations, Regulatory, Marketing, and Commercial organizations to ensure successful management of products from launch through end of life (EOL).


Position Responsibilities:


  • Ensure that on market products consistently meet customer expectations in performance, quality, reliability and customer experience while bringing key insights back to new product development programs.
  • Accountable for on market product portfolio through key partnerships in Development, Operations, Marketing and Commercial. This role has overall responsibility for sustaining, improving, and supporting products starting prior to product launch and continuing through product End of Life (EOL).
  • Structure data and insights to support evaluation, prioritization, and execution of on-market portfolio investments and initiatives.
  • Allocate resources across projects to optimize efficiency and effectiveness, identifying and resolving resource constraints and conflicts.
  • Track portfolio, product, and project performance, reporting progress, risks, quality metrics, customer impact, and business outcomes to stakeholders and senior management.
  • Engage with stakeholders to ensure their needs and expectations are met by facilitating communication between project teams and stakeholders.
  • Oversee performance, mentor and develop on market leadership staff responsible for product health, lifecycle management, quality, and portfolio execution, ensuring successful delivery of sustaining activities, product enhancements, design changes, compliance initiatives, and reliability improvements across the on-market portfolio.
  • Assign and monitor the work of project/program management staff, offering support and direction, and hold overall responsibility for coordinating efforts leading to project release.
  • Establish and continuously improve governance structures and processes that ensure compliance with organizational policies, quality requirements, regulatory obligations, and product lifecycle standards.
  • Implement best practices and lessons learned from past projects, continuously improving product development processes and methodologies.
  • Lead the On-Market Portfolio governance process, establishing visibility to product health through quality, reliability, customer experience, lifecycle, and business performance metrics while driving portfolio prioritization and investment decisions.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for cross-functional processes governing product health, including quality management, risk review, design change governance, lifecycle planning, compliance, and escalation management.

Position Requirements:


Strategic:

  • Apply portfolio management frameworks to facilitate decisions regarding sustaining investments, product enhancements, quality improvements, compliance activities, lifecycle planning, and product end-of-life decisions to maximize customer value and business impact.
  • Ability to manage a diverse portfolio of on-market products and initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, quality objectives, customer commitments, regulatory requirements, and business strategy.
  • Skills in setting long-term goals, defining project roadmaps, and aligning them with business objectives.
  • Risk Management: Identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with on market and product sustaining projects.

Technical:

  • Expert in project management methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Waterfall), critical path analysis, and tools (Project, Smartsheet, JIRA, Asana).
  • Deep understanding of the product lifecycle, including new product introduction, sustaining, design change management, quality management, compliance, and end-of-life planning.
  • Ability to manage budgets, forecast costs, and analyze the financial performance of on market products.
  • Skills in analyzing and transforming data into actionable findings to inform decision-making and measure the success of product initiatives.

Interpersonal:

  • Excellent leadership skills in spearheading cross-functional teams, inspiring and motivating team members, and driving projects to success.
  • Effective communication with stakeholders, team members, and executives to ensure alignment and convey project status.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate resources, timelines, and expectations with various stakeholders and influence at all levels.
  • Working collaboratively across Development, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, Marketing, Commercial, and Business Development organizations to ensure successful execution of portfolio priorities and improvements to on-market products.

Preferred Experience/Education/Skills:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 18 years of related experience, with 10+ years of Management experience.
  • 10+ years as Program Manager or Core Team Leader resulting in the launch of highly complex RUO products/platforms
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Business training such as an MBA degree, business certificate, or equivalent is not required but preferred

The estimated base salary range for the Director, On-Market Portfolio Leader role based in the United States of America is: $187,400 - $281,000. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects long‑term growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
