The Opportunity:

The Director, Externally Sponsored Research (ESR) (including investigator sponsored trials and collaborative research) will lead the strategy, oversight, and execution of Revolution Medicines' ESR processes within one of our disease areas. This role will ensure scientific rigor, compliance, and alignment of the ESR program with company and external regulatory guidelines. The individual will collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to drive excellence in external research. Specifically, this individual will partner with Medical Strategy, Clinical Operations, and others on strategic development and execution of the program. The opportunity involves leadership of ESR-specific scientific committees and broad visibility within the organization. The Director, ESR, reports to the head of the ESR program.

Externally Sponsored Research Program Leadership

  • Oversee the end-to-end ESR process for a specific disease area, including development of areas of interest, proposal review, approval, funding, and execution.

  • Help set scientific and strategic objectives and ensure that ESRs align.

  • Represent ESR program within the organization.

  • Lead cross-functional scientific committees in proposal and protocol reviews.

  • Maintain compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.

  • Monitor ongoing ESRs progress, ensuring milestone tracking, study reporting, and data dissemination.

  • Optimize ESR program scalability and operational efficiency, including systematic tracking of proposals, funding allocations, and study outcomes.

  • Will directly supervise the ESR manager assigned to the program.

Cross-Functional & External Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Serve as a key point of contact for ESR-related interactions with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Partner with Clinical Operations on execution of the ESR program, including contracting, budgets, enrollment, and metrics.

  • Work closely with Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Preclinical, and other teams to align ESR funding with strategic priorities.

  • Build relationships with external medical and scientific communities, including external investigators, KOLs, and cooperative groups.

  • Ensure timely and transparent communication with investigators, maintaining strong external partnerships.

Required Skills, Experience and Education:

  • Advanced scientific or medical degree (PhD, PharmD, MD).

  • 10+ years of experience in Medical Affairs and ESRs within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry.

  • Proven ability to develop and execute medical research strategies aligned with company and scientific priorities.

  • Experience in ESR program leadership, including proposal review, funding allocation, and study execution.

  • Ability to navigate cross-functional partnerships with Legal, Compliance, Regulatory, and Clinical teams.

  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills with the ability to assess research proposals for scientific merit and alignment.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills to engage internal and external stakeholders effectively.

  • Deep knowledge of global regulatory requirements for Medical Affairs, including FDA, EMA, ICH, GVP, and industry best practices.

Preferred Skills:

  • Prior experience in oncology, precision medicine, or targeted therapies.

  • Familiarity with digital tools and platforms for grant submissions and ESR management.

The base pay salary range for this full-time position for candidates working onsite at our headquarters in Redwood City, CA is listed below. The range displayed on each job posting is intended to be the base pay salary range for an individual working onsite in Redwood City and will be adjusted for the local market a candidate is based in. Our base pay salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Individual base pay salary is determined by multiple factors, including job-related skills, experience, market dynamics, and relevant education or training.

Base Pay Salary Range
$211,000$264,000 USD
