The OpportunityWe’re looking for an experienced Engineering Director to lead and scale our Porto engineering site following the acquisition of Rows, a powerful spreadsheet platform designed for modern teams, by Superhuman.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of a newly integrated product and team within Superhuman. You will be the key engineering leader in Porto, responsible for integrating a high-performing, cohesive team into Superhuman’s broader organization while scaling the site into a world-class engineering hub.
You’ll play a critical role in aligning architecture, roadmap, and culture across geographies, working closely with teams in the US and Europe. Your leadership will ensure we maintain a high technical bar while rapidly growing the team and evolving our systems to support the next generation of AI-powered products.
In this role, you will:
Lead and grow the Porto engineering site from ~18 to 60+ engineers while maintaining a high bar for technical excellence and culture.
Partner with Product and Design leaders to define and execute a shared roadmap aligned across Porto, Berlin, and US teams.
Establish strong architectural alignment and prevent divergence across teams and geographies.
Evaluate and guide technical decisions, ensuring sound tradeoffs between iteration and long-term system evolution.
Build a high-performing engineering organization, including developing the EM layer and leadership bench.
Create a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement while maintaining team trust and motivation.
Drive structured integration of the acquired Rows team, including clear assessment, performance calibration, and organizational alignment.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners to ensure strong execution and business impact.
Hire and attract top-tier engineering talent in Porto, building a sustainable and scalable organization.
Establish clear decision-making frameworks and escalation paths across distributed teams.
Proven experience leading and scaling engineering organizations (Director or senior EM level), including growing teams significantly (e.g., 15 → 50+).
Strong architectural judgment with the ability to guide complex system design and evaluate tradeoffs (e.g., evolution vs rewrite).
High technical credibility with senior and staff engineers; able to challenge decisions and elevate technical discussions.
Experience scaling complex systems and maintaining technical excellence during periods of rapid growth.
Demonstrated ability to integrate teams (e.g., post-acquisition or re-org) and drive organizational maturity.
Strong people leadership skills, including managing managers, developing leaders, and making performance decisions.
Track record of building high-performance, accountable, and collaborative engineering cultures.
Experience working across multiple geographies, with strong cross-site collaboration and alignment skills.
Clear and structured approach to decision-making, prioritization, and communication.
Strong hiring instincts and experience building high-quality teams in competitive markets.
Porto team remains motivated, engaged, and high-performing through integration.
Technical bar is visibly high, with strong architectural discipline.
Clear alignment on roadmap and technical direction across Porto, Berlin, and US.
Strong, trust-based working relationships across sites.
No “Porto vs US” dynamic — teams operate as one.
Clear performance calibration and organizational clarity.
Early signs of successful hiring and team growth.
Porto site has scaled significantly with high-quality hires.
Strong EM layer and leadership bench in place.
Engineering standards and execution are consistent across all sites.
Porto is a trusted partner in cross-site technical and product decisions.
Organization is structured for long-term scalability and sustained excellence.
Compensation range: €130,000-180,000
