Location: Rochester, NY; candidates able to travel to and work from Rochester 50% of the time or more may be considered 

Reports to: President today, SVP Ops in the future 


Director of Engineering will be responsible for the management and growth of our team of technical architects, engineers, and support analysts. The ideal candidate must be an established and respected individual who is able to bring prior experience with technical leadership and mentorship to the table to lead the development and ongoing training of staff in the latest technologies. The candidate must have a proclivity to streamline process improvements, remove redundancies and pave the way for innovative changes to the business. Successful candidates will have an established history of technical leadership, mentorship, and accomplishment in a high-growth technology company or a similar role. 


Top candidates will have the following: 

1. A preference for working with companies with a high rate of change 

2. A history of working at mid-size, high-growth technology companies 

3. Direct AWS experience with accompanying certifications, and the ability and desire to achieve a professional-level certification in either the Architect, Operations, Data, or Developer tracks 

4. Experience managing staff with billable-hour expectations in a professional services or managed cloud infrastructure organization 

5. Proven and demonstrated leadership

6. Ability to make a decision and own it, even if it’s the wrong call 

7. Willingness to change your mind

8. Natural inclination and desire to explain decisions to others 

9. Ability to set clear expectations to others that allow them to fail quickly and safely

10. Ability to work through conflict among different technology choices

11. An understanding strengthened by direct experience about the advantages and challenges associated with cloud-based infrastructure vs. premise models 

12. Exceptional problem-solving skills

13. Uncompromised integrity 

14. Self-motivation, with strong drive and ambition


Required Experience for the Role: 

1. Must have a minimum of 5+ years of experience in managing a team of software developers, cloud engineers, and other IT professionals 

2. Must have the experience and drive to create world-class service delivery experiences 

3. Must have experience managing technical individuals that provide reactive support in a NOC or similar ticket-based environment 

4. Must have experience managing technical individuals that provide proactive service driven by customer requests and gated within service contract limits 

5.Must have experience managing technical individuals that provide IT services, including cloud services such as migrations, cloud software development, and implementations, in the form of projects and other fixed-scope engagements 

6. Must be a leader that accepts challenges and inspires teams to accomplish their goals 

7. Must have the ability to attract and retain high-quality engineers and developers 

8. Must be able to juggle complex technical decisions that balance customer requirements and budget, tooling capabilities, and available cloud technologies to exceed our customers’ expectations 

9. Must be able to enhance our culture while incorporating proactive processes to scale the team structure and processes within service delivery 

Preferred Experience for the Role

1. Experience working for companies providing professional and managed services 

2. Hands-on capability to operate services within AWS to effectively mentor architects and engineers with multiple AWS certifications 

3. Hands-on experience designing and coding modern cloud software development applications to effectively mentor software architects and developers
