North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO) is a community- and interfaith- based organization addressing the needs of people in crisis, hardship & poverty. NHCO's vision is that Northern Allegheny County is a sharing community where no one needs to be cold, hungry, or alone.
Since its establishment in 1987 following devastating floods in the North Hills, NHCO has evolved its services to make a significant impact on low-income individuals and families in our region through food and emergency assistance, case management and self-sufficiency programs, and older adults services. With six offices and a community garden, 30 staff members and $3M+ budget, and a vast network of volunteers and community-based supporters, NHCO stands as one of the most esteemed human services organizations in Allegheny County.

NHCO is seeking its next Director of Development and Communications. This role is responsible for leading and executing development and communications strategies, overseeing individual donor and grant writing systems to achieve fundraising goals, and enhancing NHCO’s public presence as part of the senior leadership team. The Director of Development and Communications will manage direct reports including our Communications Coordinator, Garden Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and Development Coordinator.
This is a full-time, salary exempt role.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all fundraising including direct contributions, grants, events, and programs. Collaboratively establish goals and budget to achieve financial sustainability, organizational awareness, and growth.   
  • Design and implement strategic, goal-focused plans to develop, grow, and maintain donor outreach and relations with major donors, businesses, individuals, board members, religious organizations, civic groups, schools, foundations, and other contributors. 
  • Research, design, and direct the organization’s fundraising campaigns and special events, ensuring successful achievement of all outreach and financial goals along with flawless execution.   
  • Oversee marketing, public relations, and digital communications, including content development, through NHCO’s website, social media, and other venues to raise awareness, interest, and engagement regarding NHCO’s mission and impact. 
  • Direct production and content of fliers, promotional materials, annual reports, newsletters, donor appeals, and mass-emails (e.g., through Constant Contact) to reach intended audiences and achieve outreach and financial goals.  
  • Utilize donor software (e.g., DonorPerfect) to build, update, track, and maintain accurate donor profiles for outreach, meetings, and campaigns.  
  • Supervise staff, volunteers, and outside vendors responsible for development, communications, garden, and volunteers. Provide guidance and mentorship to direct reports to achieve performance goals in alignment with NHCO’s mission.  
  • Provide reports and presentations to the Board of Directors as needed and requested, serving as the liaison to NHCO’s Board Development and Communications Committee and the Young Community Leaders Board and as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee.  
  • Serve as an integral part of the senior management team. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Education + Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication, or related field required. 
  • Master’s degree or certifications preferred but not required. 
  • Demonstrated related experience may be substituted for education.  
  • Minimum of five years of relevant development and communication experience, with roles of progressive responsibility. 
  • Prior experience with donor database systems highly preferred.
    • Experience with DonorPerfect is a strong plus.

The salary range for this role is $70,000 - $76,000, dependent on alignment of job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
