The Director of Choral Studies and VUU Choir serves as the chief artistic and administrative leader of the university’s choral program, with primary responsibility for directing the Virginia Union University Choir and other choral ensembles. This role combines artistic vision, academic leadership, and administrative oversight to advance the university’s choral excellence, community engagement, and national presence. The Director will mentor student musicians, oversee the choral curriculum, coordinate performances, and uphold the university’s tradition of musical distinction.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and lead performances at campus events, community programs, national appearances, and special engagements.
  • Oversee the choral studies curriculum, ensuring alignment with academic standards and best practices in music education.
  • Teach courses in choral conducting, vocal techniques, and related subjects as assigned.
  • Recruit, audition, and mentor students for participation in choral ensembles.
  • Manage operational budgets, performance schedules, travel arrangements, and ensemble logistics.
  • Coordinate with university leadership for performance planning at high-profile events such as Convocation, Founder’s Day, Commencement, and other ceremonial occasions.
  • Oversee staff, accompanists, and student assistants associated with the choral program.
  • Develop strategies for recruiting and retaining talented student vocalists, including outreach to high schools, churches, and community organizations.
  • Build partnerships with alumni, donors, and community groups to support the choral program.

Education

  • Doctoral degree required in Music Education, Vocal Performance, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience directing choirs at the collegiate or professional level.
  • Demonstrated excellence in choral conducting, pedagogy, and performance preparation.
  • Must be able to lift 10 pounds.
