WCVB-TV is building a team of journalists dedicated to growing and diversifying the station's digital storytelling — original video and multiplatform content that lives across WCVB's digital platforms (web, app, YouTube, social, streaming) and within Chronicle and News broadcasts. We are seeking candidates for two off-camera positions.
One position is based in the News department and is focused on fast-turn digital publishing, breaking news video, and enterprise/investigative reporting that extends NewsCenter 5's original journalism. The second position is based in Chronicle and is focused on field-produced, Chronicle-style long-form storytelling built for digital-first release in addition to broadcast use.
What You'll Do
Field Production & Storytelling
- Produce original video stories from pitch to final edit, largely working independently in the field
- Conduct interviews, gather b-roll, and craft narratives with strong visual and storytelling quality
- Bring either a Chronicle-style sensibility (tone, pacing, visual craft) or a news-enterprise sensibility (depth, context, follow-up reporting) to assigned stories, depending on the context
- Ability to travel throughout New England — occasionally outside the region — is required
- In-person attendance is required
Digital-First Publishing
- Produce and edit short-form and long-form video optimized for digital platforms, including web, app, YouTube, and social
- Turn content on a fast timeline — including breaking news — without sacrificing production quality
- Package stories with strong titling, structure, and visual hooks suited to each platform
- Adapt Chronicle and newsroom material for streaming, social, and other digital-first formats
Enterprise & Long-Form Storytelling
- Develop digital-first stories that go beyond the day's headlines — true crime, investigative, lifestyle, archival, and multi-part features
- Identify opportunities to advance a story or archival footage beyond its initial reporting
- Identify opportunities to expand a single story into a series, or structure stories with future broadcast compilation in mind
Audience & Growth
- Track platform trends and audience behavior, and identify stories with strong shareability
- Experiment with emerging formats and growth strategies, evaluate results, and share what works with the team
- Contribute to analytics-informed content planning, including for weekends and streaming events
- Collaborate closely with digital, newsroom, and Chronicle teams to maximize reach
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in video production, TV news, digital media, and/or documentary-style storytelling
- Strong mastery of the Adobe editing suite
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in the field, from pitch through final edit
- Comfort balancing speed with production quality in a high-volume environment
- Working knowledge of platform algorithms, digital video trends, and audience behavior
- Strong writing skills and command of AP style
Preferred / Bonus Skills
- Experience producing serialized, episodic, or multi-part digital content
- Experience with YouTube and social platform optimization
- Familiarity with leveraging archival content to build context or reimagine past stories in new formats
- Experience developing or supporting strategy for streaming events with on-air talent
What Success Looks Like
- Increased video views, watch time, and engagement across digital platforms
- Growth in YouTube subscribers and overall channel performance
- Consistent production of high-quality, platform-optimized video
- Effective repurposing and extension of newsroom and Chronicle material
- Energetic, inspirational collaboration across editorial, digital, and production teams
