The Team
The Technology function is led by a CIO who manages a team of around 400 IT professionals in Europe and the US. Reporting to the CIO are 8 CTO’s responsible for Group functions, our 5 business units, Enterprise Architecture, and our IT Services team. This role forms part of the Group Enterprise Services (GES) Platform Engineering Value Stream, led by the Head of Platform Engineering. The Head of Platform Engineering reports directly into the CTO for GES.
The Role
You will be a member of a Value Stream which includes DevOps Engineering and Platform Engineering. Specifically, you will be a key member of a DevOps Engineering team which are responsible for the Continuous Improvement over our cloud and on-premises platforms. We look for opportunities to do things smarter, cheaper, quicker, and ensuring everything we do can be re-used across the value streams.
Working within Hiscox Group Enterprise Systems team as the DevOps Team Lead, you will be responsible for building out our cloud solutions in collaboration with our application teams. You will play a key role across the GES value streams to share your expertise and champion DevOps practices.
Our aim is to interweave DevOps more throughout the value streams. This role will be part of our efforts to mature our DevOps strategy and drive the necessary transformations to get there. Ensuring that we utilise DORA metrics to increase our lead times throughout the value streams and address bottlenecks efficiently. This will involve working with our application teams to inform best practice.
Key Responsibilities

Line Management of the DevOps Engineers within GES, leading the recruitment and onboarding of new engineers when relevant and identifying gaps in capacity and capability.

Oversee your team’s deployment of DevOps capabilities and provide support to the Head of Platform Engineering, specifically around capacity and delivery of the GES Portfolio.

As a Team Lead there is an expectation of coaching and mentoring your team members - and supporting the Head of Platform Engineering in terms of overall value stream management - especially with partner resources.

Influence key architectural decisions early on based on requirements of the business, budgets and resiliency. From there working within the values streams to realise this. Moving from a POC to a production ready platform.

Create and maintain Azure infrastructure across all environments utilising Azure DevOps Pipelines & Terraform.

Oversee and coach application teams in intra-day deployments mechanisms advocating for DORA informed improvements.

Coach, mentor and influence DevOps Engineers into greater DevOps maturity

Create and maintain the pipelines for publishing code to Azure

Oversee and coach application teams in intra-day deployments mechanisms

As part of the team, drive the DevOps principles and culture across GES Value Streams

Oversee and direct the vendor DevOps and Infrastructure resources, as applicable

Create and maintain Azure infrastructure across all environments

Propose and implement time-saving initiatives

Create and maintain monitoring at all levels (infrastructure, app, data)

Monitor issues and availability and ensure the correct escalation path is followed

Monitor performance and propose improvements

Implement auto-scaling of resources to meet the needs of the moment

Collaborate with all GES Value Stream application teams

Help to commoditise cloud services where possible

Identify engineering limits, bottlenecks and tipping points before they’re reached
Candidate Profile
Mandatory skillset:
-
5+ years as a DevOps engineer, working on solutions in Azure or hybrid cloud, preferably with Azure DevOps.

Knowledge of Databricks, SQL DB, or Data Factory
-
Experience with Terraform and Azure Resource Management Templates

Experience setting up and working with Puppet and Azure DevOps pipelines

Knowledge of Cloud native, microservices, containerized systems, preferably with Kubernetes

To have a strong desire for continuous improvement and an Agile way of working
