DevOps Engineer

Location: Burlingame, CA

Department: ESS Engineering

Reports to: Senior Manager, Software Engineering

Position Type: Full-time

About the Company

Peak Energy is the first American venture to advance globally proven sodium-ion battery systems as the storage standard for the new era of renewable energy on a resilient grid.

Sodium-ion is cheap, readily available, and safe — making it the leading contender in a rapidly evolving market.

Our leadership team is powered by decades of expertise in scaling gigawatt-level innovation at world-class companies such as Tesla, Northvolt, Apple, Powin, Enovix, Zipline, Solid Power, SunPower, and Fluence. We are backed by strategic investment and product partners including TDK Ventures, Eclipse Ventures, and GM Ventures.

We recently announced America's first sodium-ion grid storage factory in Sacramento with production starting Q1 2027, and over $1B in signed customer commitments including Jupiter Power and Energy Vault.

About the Role

Peak Energy is looking for a DevOps Engineer to build and scale the cloud infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and automation systems supporting our grid-scale battery storage technology.

As Peak grows from pilot deployments to gigawatt-scale production, our software infrastructure must scale alongside our products. You'll help establish the foundation that enables our engineering teams to develop, test, and deploy software efficiently and reliably.

This is a hands-on infrastructure engineering role focused on cloud services, Infrastructure as Code, database provisioning, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment automation. You'll build and maintain the systems that connect our development environments, manufacturing operations, and deployed battery systems to the cloud.

You'll work closely with software, test, and manufacturing engineering teams to improve automation, reliability, and scalability across our software infrastructure.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure supporting Peak's battery storage software, data pipelines, and engineering applications.
  • Develop and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines for software builds, testing, and deployment across development and production environments.
  • Define, provision, and manage cloud resources using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, establishing scalable and repeatable infrastructure practices as Peak expands its manufacturing operations and deployed battery fleet.
  • Partner with software and test engineering teams to integrate automated testing and validation into development and deployment workflows.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting to improve infrastructure reliability, performance, and observability.

What You'll Bring (Minimum Qualifications)

  • 4+ years of experience in DevOps, infrastructure engineering, platform engineering, or a related technical role.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code, particularly Terraform or equivalent tooling.
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or similar tools.
  • Experience provisioning, configuring, and managing cloud infrastructure on Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Experience deploying and managing cloud databases, including PostgreSQL or similar relational database systems.
  • Proficiency in Python, Bash, or other scripting languages for infrastructure automation.
  • Experience with cloud networking, access management, monitoring, and infrastructure security.
  • Experience supporting software deployments and troubleshooting production infrastructure.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or containerized application deployments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure services, including Azure Functions, Service Bus, Azure Monitor, or Azure Database for PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with IoT device infrastructure and management.
  • Experience supporting automated testing infrastructure, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or engineering validation environments.
  • Familiarity with data ingestion pipelines, streaming infrastructure, or cloud-connected devices.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Grafana, Datadog, or Application Insights.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing systems, industrial automation, IoT, or hardware-integrated software.
  • Familiarity with database administration, backup and recovery, and infrastructure performance optimization.
  • Prior experience building infrastructure and deployment processes in an early-stage or rapidly scaling engineering organization.

Our Core Values

  • Speed Through Focus — Move fast but understand why. Focus on the goal, don't sacrifice quality.
  • Mission Over Self — Put the company's mission and team success ahead of individual interests.
  • Face the Brutal Truth — Transparency, honesty, big-picture curiosity. Fearless decision making.
  • Be a Good Person — Kindness, collaboration, and teamwork.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this role is $180,000 - $240,000, with actual pay varying based on work location, experience, and skills. Our competitive benefits package includes:

  • Flexible time off
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Strong 401(k) plan
  • Equity opportunities
  • Many great work perks
