About Bristol City Leap

Bristol City Leap is an innovative 20-year partnership between Bristol City Council and Ameresco which will accelerate green energy investment in Bristol and help towards decarbonising the whole city.

Bristol City Leap is a world first, game-changing approach towards decarbonisation at city-scale and will deliver a transformative boost in the amount of renewable energy and decarbonised heat powering our city, which in turn means a cleaner, greener and healthier place to live, learn, work and play.

Over the next five years, Bristol City Leap will invest nearly £500 million into low carbon energy infrastructure, such as solar, wind, heat networks, heat pumps and energy efficiency measures – all of which will help support Bristol to achieve its carbon reduction target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Job Description:

This is a new opportunity for a Renewables Development Manager within Bristol City Leap’s Development Team.  This role will play a key role in the development of Bristol City Leap’s portfolio of low carbon energy projects across Bristol City Council’s estate and with other clients, covering the full suite of low carbon technologies including Grid connected solar PV & Wind, energy efficiency, heat pumps, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, batteries etc, during the development phase        (from sales through to contract award). 

Strong project and/or programme management as well as excellent technical and organisational skills are fundamental, as is the ability to liaise with people at all levels of the organisation. 

This position is based in Bristol City Leap’s offices in Bristol, United Kingdom.

Responsibilities:

Project Development:

  • Develop renewable projects in particular ground mount solar PV and onshore wind.

  • Lead on  land transactions, planning and consents, surveys, grid connection and lease agreements.

  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables to ensure successful project development including management of budgets.

  • Coordinate different workstreams and resources such as design, planning, procurement, commercial, engineering, and delivery during development phase of the project.

  • Improve the success rates and timelines for projects reaching the start of construction.

  • Control the  project programme and the project risk management process.

Commercial

  • Negotiate contracts and sub contracts, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) agreements,  land leases and other contracts.

  • Stay informed about market trends, policy changes, and emerging technologies to identify new opportunities for growth.

Quality

  • Lead the preparation and submission of proposals, presentations, and reports for clients and senior management.

  • Produce and manage high quality project programmes.

Strategic Planning

  • Contribute to the execution of strategic plans to ensure projects align with business objectives.

Relationship Management:

  • Cultivate strong and productive relationships with Bristol City Council, clients and other stakeholders to facilitate the successful delivery of objectives.

  • Management of external consultants.

  • Work collaboratively with Bristol City Council colleagues to identify opportunities for decarbonisation projects on the Council’s estate.

  • Proactively respond to incoming enquiries from potential clients.

People are important to our business and therefore the ability to interface with other disciplines within Bristol City Leap and Ameresco, including the Business Development and Engineering teams, is a vital skill that we look for in all members of our team. 

Skills/Experience:

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Experience in a Project Development role in an energy services, renewable or clean tech business.

  • Experience in developing grid scale renewables (solar, wind, BESS etc) is essential.

  • Knowledge and experience of renewable and  low carbon technologies such as energy solar PV, efficiency measures,  heat pumps, etc.

  • Recognised formal project management qualification (PMP/APMP or equivalent) is desirable

  • Commercial awareness, good negotiation skills  and experience of using commercial models and  cost plans.

  • The ability to:
    Focus on clear goals and actions.
    Manage a range of projects types and complex business cases to deliver high quality outcomes under pressure. 
    Drive the development of a range of complex energy projects.
    Ability to communicate with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders including technical experts and decision-makers.

  • Advanced IT skills in relation to Word, PowerPoint and Excel and MS Project or other project tools.

Personal Attributes: 

The successful candidate will be goal focused,  driven, self starting, confident and have a flexible approach to work. They will be customer focused, with a can do attitude, passionate about renewable energy.  They should be able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills including the ability to multi-task, prioritise work under pressure and achieving completion within deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications:

Relevant degree, e.g. engineering, or relevant equivalent industry or vocational qualification  AND/OR; and experience in a role involving the development of energy efficiency/renewable energy projects across a range of buildings/clients.
