Role Summary
The Development Engineer II (Application, Database, and IT Collaboration) designs, builds, supports, and troubleshoots applications that integrate with industrial platforms, operational data sources, relational databases, and supporting hardware. The role balances medium-to-high complexity software development with hands-on problem solving across applications, databases, plant-floor interfaces, and endpoint or infrastructure-related issues, working closely with IT teams to resolve incidents and improve system reliability.
Core Development Responsibilities
Design, code, debug, and maintain applications using appropriate programming languages, frameworks, and tools
Deliver medium to high-complexity development or automation tasks as part of a collaborative team
Develop and maintain SQL Server and MySQL-backed application features, including tables, views, procedures, and functions
Design data models that support real-time operational needs as well as reporting and analytics
Perform unit and integration testing and participate in peer code reviews
Maintain and enhance existing codebases with attention to reliability, performance, and maintainability
Document program logic, development changes, testing, and corrections using established engineering practices
Database & Industrial Data Responsibilities (Embedded)
Monitor and tune SQL Server and MySQL systems supporting industrial and enterprise workloads
Analyze execution plans, query statistics, and data access patterns to diagnose and resolve performance issues
Design indexing and schema strategies appropriate for high-volume, append-heavy, and time-series industrial data
Support ingestion and querying of data from Ignition gateways, tags, historians, and event-driven datasets
Protect production systems by preventing reporting or investigative queries from degrading operational performance
Participate in incident response related to database latency, availability, or data integrity
Hardware Troubleshooting & IT Collaboration
Troubleshoot application issues that intersect with hardware, endpoints, industrial devices, or on-site infrastructure
Work closely with IT teams on:
Root cause analysis involving servers, workstations, industrial PCs, or connected devices
Deployment, configuration, and support of systems that bridge applications and physical hardware
Security, access, and compliance requirements for production and enterprise environments
Partner with IT during incidents to restore service quickly and implement long-term corrective actions
Coordinate changes affecting applications, databases, hardware interfaces, or plant-floor systems to minimize operational risk
Collaboration & Communication
With Application Developers
Share best practices for application, database, and integration design
Mentor less-experienced developers and provide constructive code review feedback
Raise concerns early when new features may impact performance, scalability, or supportability
With Automation, Operations, and IT Teams
Translate operational and hardware-related needs into reliable software and data solutions
Respect uptime, stability, safety, and security requirements of industrial systems
Coordinate deployments and changes across application, database, and infrastructure boundaries
Security, Compliance, and Quality
Ensure software and data access comply with organizational security and compliance standards
Implement and support data protection, access controls, and secure integration patterns
Follow established software product engineering and DevOps practices, including version control and CI/CD
