About the Role

As a Senior Java Backend Developer, you will design, build, and maintain backend applications that power our digital banking services. You’ll work on scalable platforms and deliver core banking functionalities used across multiple customer propositions. Your work will ensure high standards of performance, security, and maintainability throughout the development lifecycle.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop backend applications following ING standards
  • Write clean, tested code and perform unit testing
  • Collaborate with DevOps engineers to manage the full software lifecycle
  • Embed security best practices into every stage of development
  • Support bug fixing during SIT and UAT phases
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues
  • Analyse defects to validate solution design quality
  • Review technical and functional specifications and perform code reviews
  • Communicate and escalate issues when necessary

What We’re Looking For

  • Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar role, ideally in a 24/7 banking environment
  • Strong knowledge of Agile methodologies
  • Expertise in Java development (J2EE, Spring, Spring Boot)
  • Advanced skills in REST & SOAP services
  • Experience with microservices architecture and API management
  • Familiarity with event-driven systems (MQ, Kafka)
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems and containerisation (Kubernetes, Docker)
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines
  • Proficiency in JUnit, TDD, and Spring Integration testing
  • Nice to have: experience with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK)
  • Good knowledge of Azure DevOps, DBMS and SQL (Oracle, PL/SQL)
  • Strong English communication skills (written and spoken)

Additional Preferred Experience

  • Background in assisting channels such as call center, back-office operations, and chat/chatbot solutions
  • Nice to Have:
    • Experience building AI chatbots
    • Familiarity with Virtual Assistant platforms
    • Knowledge of Google DialogFlow CX
