Detroit Bureau Chief:
The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced journalist to run automotive and manufacturing coverage from Detroit.
America’s Rust Belt is at the red-hot center of a global trade war that threatens to upend decades of globalization. President Trump has imposed sweeping tariffs meant to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. Yet the road from tariffs to manufacturing revival is bound to be a long and bumpy one. We need a top-notch editor capable of helping our readers navigate it.
The ideal candidate has a proven track-record of ambitious, creative storytelling and is expert at breaking-news coverage. We’re looking for someone who’s deeply curious and capable of taking a global view of the automotive industry and manufacturing broadly. This is an opportunity to go deep on manufacturing and technology, on culture and design. It’s also a chance to deeply examine the Rust Belt economies powered by these industries and how they’re changing. The role oversees coverage of legacy automakers like GM and Ford as well as Tesla and other electric-vehicle manufacturers.
This job is based in Detroit and reports to the Corporate Editor.
You will:
Help set the long-term coverage agenda for the Detroit Bureau and oversee the daily news flow.
Nurture a top-flight team of reporters.
Successfully collaborate with other coverage areas and with colleagues across the newsroom to produce great and distinctive journalism.
Seek new ways of doing our journalism digitally, and champion them in the newsroom.
You have:
More than 5 years of experience managing reporters or editors.
Deep knowledge of the companies and people who dominate the automotive industry and manufacturing broadly.
Demonstrated success at managing exclusive news coverage and longer-term work.
The very highest standards of excellence, and a commitment to ambitious and distinctive journalism.
