Summary:
The San Diego Union-Tribune is looking for a versatile editor who can assist with the daily planning of the sports section (online and print), plan and guide daily section production, work alongside full-time reporters and freelancers, and guide special projects as needed.
What you will do:
- Work collaboratively with the sports editor to devise a comprehensive plan for covering San Diego's sports scene
- Edit, post stories and manage the Union-Tribune's sports website and apps, and assist in daily newsletter distribution
- Help maintain a daily sports planner and work collaboratively with copy editors and designers to execute a daily plan
- Serve as a liaison between the sports editor and the production desk
- Work with reporters to develop more engaging, clear, concise copy
- Develop and maintain a stable of freelance reporters
- Work in a digital-first environment where speed and accuracy rule
What you will bring:
- A minimum of five years of journalism experience or equivalent
- Academic degree or equivalent experience in journalism
- Proven ability to juggle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
- Commitment to the fundamentals of journalism: Fairness, accuracy, accessibility
- Knowledge of basic content management systems, newspaper production systems and social media platforms
- Strong interpersonal, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills and an ability to work with people at all levels and across departments and divisions
- Flexibility to work night/weekend/holiday shifts
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required
The annual salary range is $80,000-$85,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and a 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).

The majority of our roles are 100% remote excluding Production & Circulation although some roles require customer visits or occasional in office work. We do not have any intention of returning to an in office environment/culture.
