Job Description

We have multiple openings for graduate level students and for students who received a bachelor’s or master’s degree to engage in practical research to further their educational goals. You will have the chance to support engineering projects involving research, conceptual design, analysis, or technology development. If you are energetic and enthusiastic with knowledge and interest in at least one of these skill areas: mechanical, electrical, systems, materials, manufacturing, or test engineering this internship could be a good match for you. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) supporting the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Principal Directorate. 

Full time onsite: This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

In this role you will 

  • Work directly with a mentor in your field of study while finding solutions to real world problems.
  • Under limited direction and supervision will conduct research in assigned area.
  • Perform technical assignments of a basic degree of complexity and provide advanced technical support to engineers in research and development projects.
  • Document and communicate results of technical data generated.
  • Share engineering information and promoting open dialogue.
  • Attend relevant seminars.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). See Additional Information section below for details.
  • Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a graduate degree or has completed their bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, or a related field.
  • A track record of outstanding academic performance.
  • Experience applying advanced engineering principles to solve technical problems.
  • Eagerness to contribute in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment.
  • Must have excellent leadership, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction, however able to work in team and collaborative environment as well.
  • Qualifications We Desire

  • GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Technical project experience, internships, leadership experience.

Pay

$6,752 - $8,201 Monthly

This position is under a step structure.  Please note that the step placement is determined by your most recent completed academic year.

Security Clearance

None required.  However, this position involves U.S. Export Control; this work must be performed by a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident, U.S. national, or U.S. protected individual (e.g., refugee, asylee)).

If your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process.  This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check.  (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)

Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile device in your possession.  This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.  

If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas.  Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
