The Database Administrator IV (DBA) will have extensive experience in managing, optimizing, and securing databases in complex environments. This role involves overseeing database architecture, performance tuning, and strategic planning while providing technical leadership and mentoring to junior team members.
Role Responsibilities
- Performance Optimization:
- Oversee the performance tuning of databases, including query optimization, indexing strategies, and resource management.
- Diagnose and resolve complex performance issues.
- Ensure that database parameters are appropriate for the workload.
- Patching:
- Ensure patching policies are in place to keep databases compliant and secure.
- Apply patches, updates, and upgrades to databases in a timely manner.
- Maintenance:
- Lead routine maintenance to ensure the stability and reliability of database systems.
- Ensure index and statistics maintenance is current.
- Backup and Recovery:
- Develop and enforce comprehensive backup and recovery strategies.
- Ensure that disaster recovery plans are tested and effective.
- Lead efforts in data protection and high availability solutions.
- Security Management:
- Establish and enforce database security policies and practices.
- Manage advanced security configurations, including encryption and auditing.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

- Troubleshooting and Support:
- Serve as the primary point of escalation for critical incidents and operational problems.
- Provide expert-level troubleshooting and resolution for complex database issues.
- On call:
- Participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours and weekend support.
- Project Leadership:
- Lead and participate in database-related projects such as migrations, upgrades, and new implementations.
- Work closely with project managers and stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
- Team Leadership:
- Mentored and guided junior database administrators and other IT staff.
- Provide training, support, and knowledge sharing to enhance the team’s capabilities.
- Documentation:
- Create and maintain detailed documentation of database architectures, configurations, and procedures.
- Develop and update operational and disaster recovery plans.
- Collaboration:
- Collaborate with other IT departments, including application development, network engineering, and systems administration, to ensure integrated and efficient database solutions.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Stay current with industry trends, product updates, and emerging technologies.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance database management and performance.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Advanced degrees or certifications are a plus.
Experience:
- 7-10+ years of experience in Teradata database administration with a proven track record of managing large-scale, complex environments.
- Experience in a senior or lead role is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Technical Skills:
- Expert knowledge of one or more of the Teradata.
- Advanced proficiency in SQL
- Experience with Azure or AWS is highly desirable.
- Databricks and/or Snowflake are highly desirable.
- Extensive experience with database backup and recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions.
- Strong experience in performance tuning, troubleshooting, and capacity planning.
- Understanding of following Change Management procedures to deploy system changes.
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
- Proactive, strategic thinker with a focus on continuous improvement.
