As a Data Governance Analyst – Data Catalog, you will play a key role in advancing IDEXX’s enterprise data governance strategy through the adoption and growth of our data catalog, powered by Alation.
In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert for the enterprise data catalog, partnering with business and technology teams to onboard data, define use cases, and drive adoption of data governance and stewardship practices across the organization.
This position focuses on enabling data visibility, governance, and business value through metadata management and stewardship practices, rather than hands-on development of data pipelines or technical system implementation.
You will help IDEXX improve data accessibility, understanding, and trust by enabling teams to better document, manage, and govern their data.
In This Role You Will...
Serve as a data governance analyst for the Alation data catalog, supporting enterprise data management, governance, and visibility initiatives
Develop deep subject matter expertise in the data catalog, including metadata capabilities, governance features, and use case applications
Partner with business and technology teams to onboard new groups to the data catalog, identifying data assets, applicable catalog features, and expected business outcomes
Define and document business-driven use cases that demonstrate the value of data catalog adoption (e.g., improved data discoverability, reduced time to find information)
Write and manage use-case-focused user stories (JIRA) centered on governance outcomes, adoption, and business value
Actively promote and support data governance and catalog adoption across IDEXX through training sessions, stakeholder engagement, and ongoing partnership
Support enterprise change management efforts, helping teams understand the value and expectations of data governance participation
Build strong cross-functional relationships to drive engagement, onboarding, and sustained adoption
Partner with data stewards across the organization to ensure metadata quality, documentation, and business context remain accurate and useful
Help evolve and mature data stewardship practices, advocating for accountability and ownership of data assets
Contribute to the development and growth of the Data Steward Guild, with the opportunity to take on increasing leadership in stewardship initiatives
Support integration of governance concepts such as data policies, classifications, and retention rules within the catalog
Collaborate with Information Security and Architecture teams to align with initiatives such as Data Security Posture Management (DSPM)
Provide input on scalable and sustainable approaches to metadata management and governance
What You Will Need to Succeed...
3–5+ years of experience in data governance, data stewardship, data management, analytics, or related data-focused roles
Location: we prefer it if you are local, driving distance to our HQ in Westbrook, Maine, where you would have flexibility to work hybrid on-site only 8 days per month. Alternatively, if you lived in New England, in MA or NH, and could work remotely and occasionally come into the HQ that is fine, too.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain data concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders across business, analytics, engineering, or governance teams
Ability to influence without authority and drive adoption through relationship-building and communication
Experience writing user stories or documenting business use cases (JIRA or similar tools)
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives and stakeholder engagements simultaneously
Comfortable working in an evolving environment that requires flexibility, curiosity, and continuous learning
If you had any of these, it would be a plus...
Experience with data catalog tools such as Alation, Collibra, or similar platforms
Familiarity with data governance frameworks (e.g., DAMA-DMBOK)
Experience supporting or participating in data stewardship or governance initiatives
Foundational understanding of data concepts such as databases, ETL processes, or data warehousing (without requiring hands-on development)
Experience supporting training, onboarding, or adoption initiatives
Prior involvement in building or supporting communities of practice (e.g., data steward guilds, governance councils)
