The Role

Job Description:
We're looking for a Principal Research Scientist with an Intervention Science focus to join the Developer Success Lab (devsuccesslab.com). The Developer Success Lab is an innovative, cross-disciplinary research team that produces public-facing applied research on how developers and technology teams learn, work and thrive. We want to change how the world understands, values, and invests in developer teams and technology teams. To achieve this, we tackle far-reaching, meaningful questions at the intersection of the social and behavioral sciences and software research.
About this role
As a Principal Research Scientist, you will work directly with the VP of Research and other research scientists to design, implement, analyze and publish research studies. In this role, you will be responsible for leading end-to-end research projects that inform our applied understanding of improving software team effectiveness. You will craft original research questions, design new methodologies, lead data collection and analysis in your expertise area, and act as a key thought partner to other Research Scientists on joint projects.
Our lab's output ranges across a spectrum of technical and translational, from general audience research talks & white papers to publishing scientific journal articles. You will be a co-author on these deliverables, contributing deeply to our public research launches. As an applied intervention expert, one of your key focus areas will be collaborating with technical stakeholders to inform our community-based methods and the translation of existing research findings into actionable intervention designs. You will also craft evaluation strategies with access to a plethora of complex data, ranging from social science survey data to large-scale, longitudinal software team data from the Pluralsight Flow and Pluralsight Skills products.
Our lab aspires to raise the bar for rigorous shared methods in evidence-based software engineering and technology team management. Therefore, there is significant opportunity in this role for public science communication, e.g. regularly attending industry conferences, publishing empirical studies, and curating public thought leadership on intervention science. We welcome and will provide an enthusiastic platform for scientists who wish to grow a significant public presence in the space of software team and technology team learning, thriving, wellbeing, and other social topics.
What we're looking for:
This role is a great fit for someone who is highly motivated to have a broad impact, deeply excited to grow their public-facing presence as a scientist, and ready to build behavioral science in an exciting emerging field. You care about moving the needle on evidence-based practice for real teams, and you have a healthy respect for the complexity of putting science into practice. You are ready and motivated to step into research leadership in an emerging space, and you are looking for a highly supportive team with ambitious aspirations for impact.
You are excited to work on a cross-disciplinary team of scientists and practitioners: you bring a curiosity and willingness to jump into projects, you want to put findings into the hands of people who will use them, and you are curious and energetic about empowering and inspiring others to use research findings in the real world.
Expected Experience:

  • You hold a PhD in a quantitative behavioral methods field with a strong applied research background and expertise in human behavior, such as a quantitative social science. You have at least 6+ years experience completing rigorous end-to-end research projects. Other focus areas relevant to our topics (such as Computer Science, HCI or Information Science) with strong intervention science experience may be considered, but should have a publication record or other demonstrable experience in behavioral science.
  • At least 6+ years demonstrated experience adapting theoretical research findings into actionable real-world interventions. For example: was a researcher lead on projects implementing behavioral science interventions in schools, clinical, or organizational settings. Strong technical skillsets in the evaluation of large-scale interventions, such as coordinating applied multisite trials and/or performing observational causal inference.
  • A strong plus is experience with community-based methods, such as community stakeholder interviews and integrating community members into design work and decision making around interventions.
  • Ability to coordinate, communicate, and deliver a high level of work quality to a research launch schedule
  • A commitment to kindness, a strong belief in increasing access to scientific evidence and research methods, and a desire for all to succeed are necessary. You share our commitment to building a learning culture, supporting the growth of teammates with diverse skillsets, and fostering vibrant research.
  • Dedication to equity in measurement, ethical research, and strong ability to design psychologically safe, inclusive research which participants can trust and benefit from.
  • You are highly skilled at evidence-based reasoning with human behavior as it impacts our research questions, and you have evidence of strong communication skills. While upholding standards of rigor, you also understand how to evaluate and choose research methods in the real world and can provide leadership in these choices. You think deeply about trade-offs in research, about operationalization and generalizability of research findings, have experience dealing with complexity in measurement, and can communicate thoughtfully about this to others.
  • Proficiency in developer workflow data and/or individual learner data is a strong plus.
