2026 NEW JERSEY YOUTH TOBACCO SURVEY (NJYTS)

DATA COLLECTORS NEEDED IN NORTHERN NJ ONLY

TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT, OCTOBER – DECEMBER 2026

The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) and Rutgers University are sponsoring the New Jersey Youth Tobacco Survey (NJYTS) during the fall of 2026. This survey asks students in grades 9-12 about behaviors, experiences, and perceptions related to tobacco use and various tobacco products.

The survey will be conducted in up to 50 public high schools in the state of New Jersey. The results of the NJYTS will be used to (1) monitor trends and prevalence of tobacco use among students; (2) evaluate the impact of state and local efforts to prevent tobacco use behaviors; and (3) improve school health education policies and programs.

We seek professionals with an interest in the health and well-being of adolescents to serve as on-site Data Collectors to administer the web survey in a limited number of selected classes and schools. This is a temporary position in which you can expect to work up to 4 days per week for approximately 6-8 weeks. You will know assignments at least 5 days in advance and must be available full-time, Monday - Friday for the duration of the survey period.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• Access to internet to enter daily school participation rates and receive assignments

• Personal email and cell phone to communicate with your supervisor

• Cell phone to call assigned schools in preparation for the survey administration visit

• Ability to pass a background screening

• Successful completion of an in-person, mandatory 2-day training in early October

• A vehicle in good working condition to be used to drive to assigned schools

• A valid driver’s license

EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

• Experience in field data collection/survey research

• Experience working with adolescents and teens, particularly in a school setting

• Experience in working with the public and leading a task

• Experience in working off-site with little face-to-face contact with supervisor

• Experience using a computer/tablet, including navigating the internet, using web applications, emailing, and attaching files

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:

• Professional appearance and demeanor

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including comfort with speaking in front of a group

• Independent, self-starter with the ability to effectively adapt to unexpected situations

• Organized and punctual, particularly in the mornings (scheduled arrival times may be as early as 6 a.m.)

• Ability to analyze a situation, identify potential problems, and recommend solutions

• Ability to lift and carry survey supplies up to 25 lbs.

• Basic level of technological literacy

WHEN: Candidates will attend a mandatory 2-day training, tentatively scheduled for October 1st and 2nd at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. Upon successful completion of training, data collector assignments will begin in early-to-mid October and continue until all schools have been surveyed.

SALARY & REIMBURSEMENTS: Your pay each week will be determined based on the number of schools you visit in a week, with a base pay rate of $21.00 per hour; you will be paid 10 hours per school visit. Our goal is that nearly all data collectors will be scheduled to visit 2 to 3 schools a week. However, we cannot guarantee these visits every week of data collection as there are many school scheduling factors beyond our control. For use of your car, you will be reimbursed at the rate of $.76 per mile (plus tolls and parking). You can expect to be paid 16 hours for attending two days of training.
