About Us

The State Bureau of Investigation’s mission is to serve Sheriffs, Police Chiefs, and District Attorneys as well as State and Federal partners, by investigating crimes and providing technical assistance in order to increase public safety for the citizens of the state of North Carolina. The SBI does so by conducting criminal investigations of allegations in areas of jurisdiction including narcotics, arson, election laws, misuse of state property, environmental crimes, human trafficking, child sexual abuse in day care centers, and threats made against public officials. The SBI provides support to local agencies related to computer crime investigations, use of force investigations, deaths in custody, crime scenes, financial crimes, missing and endangered persons, public corruption, cold cases, K9, special response team, bomb squad, and air wing. The SBI serves as North Carolina's repository of information on criminal history records, fingerprint identification, expungements, sex offender registry, and concealed handgun permits. The SBI manages the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAAC), which is the fusion center for the state of North Carolina, as well as the Behavioral Threat Assessment Unit, which assesses and manages threats of mass violence.

Description of Work

Primary Purpose of Position:
Criminal Information Auditors prepare and conduct comprehensive audits of law enforcement/criminal justice agencies, as well as non-criminal justice agencies, across the state. The audits are based on state and federal requirements regarding the use and dissemination of information obtained through the Division of Criminal Information Network (DCIN). Auditors process Originating Routing Identifiers (ORIs), which involves the issuance of new and additional ORI's. The auditors provide user support for various programs related to the area of assignment.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Prepare and conduct law enforcement agency audits
- Print and mail weekly concealed handgun permits
- Manage all agency users' agreements for access to DCIN (Division of Criminal Information)
- Conduct onsite agency inspections to ensure proper and compliant placement of equipment that is used for accessing DCIN information
- Respond to agency, citizen, and CJIS (FBI – Criminal Justice Information Services) requests related to DCIN, user agreements, and ORI issuance.
Position/Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 5:00PM.
- Must be a U.S. citizen due to security requirements for accessing SBI applications to which the person in this position must have access.
- Obtaining Division of Criminal Information (DCI) Network certification within 3 months of hire is required for this position.
- Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Some overnight travel is required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Range:  $43,267 - $69,000

Salary will be based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations for the advertised position.

Bachelor’s from an appropriately accredited institution in criminal justice, business administration, or a closely related field AND two years of experience in law enforcement operations or administrative experience in law enforcement;

Per North Carolina General Statute 143B-1209.54, applicants hired into a position certified as a criminal justice officer or justice officer are required to electronically submit fingerprints to the NC State Bureau of Investigation for a state and national criminal history record check and enrollment in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Next Generation Identification (NGI) System and Criminal Justice Record of Arrest and Prosecution Background (Rap Back) Service.  This is in addition to submitting fingerprints during the application process.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
