This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and up to one remote workday per week. The NC Department of Insurance trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The position works with District Attorneys within an assigned area of the state to present and explain evidence gathered by the Criminal Investigations Division, Bail Bonds Regulatory Division, or other DOI work units. Responds to questions and provides any additional information or documentation needed to assist and persuade local District Attorneys to bring criminal charges and fully prosecute insurance and/or bail bonds crimes that have been investigated by DOI and for which evidence has been documented and established.
Works closely with the Senior Deputy of the Fraud Control Group to determine case priorities and coordinate efforts with District Attorneys to advance cases toward trial and support the successful prosecution of insurance and/or bail bonds crimes.
Our attorneys represent the Department of Insurance in legal proceedings and provide expert legal counsel on complex insurance and/or bail bonds matters, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations and protecting the interests of the State of North Carolina.
Examples of Responsibilities Include:
* Conduct legal research and analysis on complex insurance coverage issues, policy interpretation, and regulatory compliance.
* Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents, including pleadings, motions, settlement agreements, and contracts.
* Represent Insurance in litigation, including trials, arbitrations, mediations, and administrative hearings.
* Provide legal advice and guidance to internal stakeholders on various insurance-related matters, including claims, underwriting, and product development.
* Manage a caseload of diverse legal matters, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
* Collaborate with external counsel and expert witnesses as needed.
* Stay abreast of legal and regulatory developments impacting the insurance industry.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

* Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
* Admission to the bar in the relevant jurisdiction.
* 3-5 years of experience practicing law, with a significant focus on insurance defense, coverage, or regulatory matters.
* Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts clearly.
* Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
* Demonstrated experience in litigation, including drafting pleadings, conducting discovery, and appearing in court.
* Proficiency in legal research software and Microsoft Office Suite.

Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and one year of professional legal experience. NOTE: GS 114-2 and 114-6 make it the duty of the Attorney General of NC to represent the State of North Carolina in all litigation unless another statute specifically states otherwise.
