Title of Course

Women, Gender and the Economy

Compensation 

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds. 
• Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $23.30 per hour. 
(Rate effective September 1, 2026) 
• Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $36.67 per hour. (Rate effective  
September 1, 2026) 
• In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the 
appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.

Duties 

The nominal workload for this position is 72 hours. Duties and responsibilities will be in accordance with Article 22 of the Collective Agreement.

Under the direction of the course instructor(s), the course coordinator will be responsible for the following:

-screening and directing students’ e-mail;

-facilitating students’ switching among seminars in the first weeks of classes;

-assisting with the collection and submission of grades for the progress exam;

-developing marking sheets for grade compilations;

-assisting with the collection and submission of final grades;

-acting as a liaison between instructors and seminar leaders (to coordinate meetings, etc.); 

-proctoring exams; 

-helping to set up WISE 1F90’s use of Turnitin.com and monitoring student compliance 

-dealing with student’s requests and checking documentation for extensions; 

-attending weekly meetings with the instructor(s) and Teaching Assistants; 

-setting up and maintaining Sakai for the course;

-briefing any instructor who misses a weekly meeting; 

-being available for blocks of time based on job demands and peak periods and consistently otherwise;

-facilitating the coverage of seminars when a Teaching Assistant is ill; and

-performing other course-related duties as they arise

Qualifications 

-A completed Honours B.A. and substantial, demonstrable training in women’s and/or gender studies are required. If there are insufficient numbers of applicants with an Honours B.A. and required qualifications, applicants in the final year of completing an Honours B.A. and demonstrable, substantial training in women’s and/or gender studies will be considered.

-A minimum overall GPA of 78% (B+) is required. 

-Must be extremely dependable and possess strong time-management skills

-Strong organizational skills required

-Demonstrable history of and efficiency with the computer program Excel

-Demonstrable efficiency in and history of working with Turnitin.com

-Demonstrable history of, and ability to work efficiently with, e-mailing students en mass

-Familiarity with online learning management system

As per Article 22.04 of the Collective Agreement: 

·         Graduate Students enrolled at Brock University shall not accept an appointment in excess of an average of ten (10) hours per week over an academic term, in which she is enrolled as a full time student, without the prior permission of the Dean of Graduate Studies; 

·         Undergraduate Students enrolled at Brock University shall not accept more than nine (9) Teaching Assistant appointments, or the equivalent of nine (9) Teaching Assistant appointments in any classification, per term minus the number of courses in which that student is currently enrolled; 

·         Part-time Graduate Students and Non-Students shall not accept any appointment which, taken together with all other appointments at the University, would cause the member to exceed the maximum number of regular hours (i.e. not overtime hours) allowable in a work week under the Employment Standards Act, as amended from time to time. 

Permission to exceed the above-mentioned workload limits should be obtained prior to application. 

The Collective Agreement governs part-time Instructor, Teaching Assistant, Lab Demonstrator, Course Coordinator and Marker-Grader positions at Brock University. The Agreement can be accessed on the Human Resources Web Site - brocku.ca/human-resources
