Helping Canadians make sense of our world is our mission. We’re looking for an experienced journalist to lead our coverage of South Asia, and guide our audience through the complex and critical relationships that make the Indo-Pacific region so vital for Canada and Canadians.

CBC News is hiring a Correspondent to be based in Mumbai, India. The successful candidate will be an exceptional journalist with a broad range of video, audio and text storytelling skills aimed at mobile and streaming audiences.

We are looking to hire a journalist who thrives when covering the latest news; a reporter who is always generating and pitching stories; someone who breaks news and is always pushing forward on new angles on stories. Understanding India’s emerging role in geopolitics, trade and technology, culture and climate is vital. You bring with you a deep list of news makers and are able to quickly develop new contacts who reflect the diversity of the region.

You thrive in a demanding daily news environment meeting multiple deadlines across all platforms. You are adept at delivering live analysis and context often on short notice just as easily as you’re able to deliver packaged reports and current affairs supporting all CBC platforms. All of your journalism adheres to the CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices.

In this position, you will work closely with a video producer based in the Mumbai bureau, as well as the World News team based in Toronto.  You understand that stories can break at any time of the day and you have a genuine desire to be on-top of that coverage. The position requires a flexible schedule, including rotational shift work, weekends and overnights to cover breaking news; and a willingness to deploy on a moment’s notice, including to conflict zones. The minimum assignment length for this position is two years and, if agreed to by both parties, may be extended for up to an additional two years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generate and execute compelling journalism that explores a variety of voices and perspectives, from daily news to long-form features.

  • Go live on any platform whenever a story requires it.

  • Produce original content while also responding to breaking news and emerging stories in a fast-paced environment.

  • Pitch and cover stories that resonate with our national audience, with an ability to find the significance in world events for a Canadian audience.

  • Research and analyze complex issues using specialized sources to ensure our audience gets a deep, nuanced understanding of important topics.

  • Quickly identify significant issues and respond strategically to ensure they are covered accurately and effectively.

  • Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts with a wide range of sources.

What is required:

  • You are a journalist with a minimum of 8 years of comparable experience, including significant reporting experience at a network/national level.

  • Your extensive experience demonstrates that you can pivot quickly when a story changes, you remain respectful to colleagues when there are competing deadlines and content demands, and present professionally on-air.

  • Exceptional storytelling skills, with a proven ability to produce memorable social, written, audio and visual content

  • Exceptional critical thinking skills, with an ability to breakdown complex issues and explain them clearly to audiences

  • Demonstrated ability to produce compelling social video content.

  • Strong on-air presence and skill with live reporting.

  • Extensive knowledge of world news and current affairs issues

  • A collaborative team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and willingness to work long and flexible hours, including overtime, evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills combined with a successful track record of working as part of a small team

  • Strong grasp of CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices, with an ability to understand how they apply in your daily storytelling.

  • A university degree in journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
