Description of Work

This posting is for a Correctional Officer I position at The Governor’s Western Residence in Asheville, NC (Buncombe County). The position will be assigned to Marion Correctional Institution, located in Marion, NC (McDowell County), and will perform duties at the Governor’s Western Residence as needed. In addition to responsibilities at the facility, this position will work under the direction of and provide security support to the Director of the Executive Mansion.
Key duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Provide secure transportation of offender(s) to and from the residence in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Conduct daily security, safety, and sanitation inspections of the residence.
- Assign and oversee the daily duties and work assignments of offenders assigned to the residence.
- Maintain and ensure the proper care and operational condition of equipment assigned to the residence and grounds.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, as needed to support the operations, security, and maintenance of the residence and grounds.
This position is required to participate in rotating on-call duties and may be called upon to respond to needs or issues outside of normal working hours.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade Range: $42,512.00 - $74,396.00

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Documented experience in Offender Supervision.

  • Documented experience with Contraband Searches.

Special Provision:

Must live within 30 minutes of the mansion due to maximum response to visitor request or special instructions is 30 minutes.  The North Carolina Governor's Western Residence is located at 45 Patton Mountain Road, Asheville, NC 28804.

About The Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
