Job Summary
Goosehead Insurance is seeking a Corporate Counsel to join its Legal department and serve as a key in-house advisor on litigation, regulatory, and compliance matters. Reporting to the General Counsel, this attorney will manage a diverse litigation docket—including errors & omissions (E&O), franchise disputes, commercial disputes, and employment matters—while also providing preventive counseling and strategic advice across the business. The role partners closely with Compliance, IT, and business leaders on regulatory matters including RESPA, commissions, licensing, fees, privacy and cybersecurity, and franchisor compliance and requirements. This is an excellent opportunity for a mid-level litigator from a large or well-regarded law firm to transition in-house and build deep subject-matter expertise in insurance, franchise, and consumer protection law within a fast-growing, publicly traded company.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Manage the company's litigation portfolio with outside counsel, with primary emphasis on errors & omissions (E&O) claims, franchise disputes, and commercial and employment litigation, including strategy, budget oversight, and reporting to senior leadership.
Provide practical, business-oriented preventive counseling to internal stakeholders to identify and reduce legal risk before it results in disputes or regulatory exposure.
Partner with Compliance, IT, and business teams on regulatory matters involving RESPA, commissions, licensing, fees, and privacy and cybersecurity, including overseeing cyber incident investigations and response.
Advise on franchisor compliance and requirements, handle franchise disputes, and manage the preparation, review, and state-by-state submission of Franchise Disclosure Documents (FDDs).
Counsel the business on state insurance laws and licensing requirements applicable to Goosehead's franchise and corporate operations.
Advise on consumer protection laws, including UDAP/UDAAP, the TCPA, deceptive trade practices statutes, and advertising and sales practices regulations.
Provide employment law guidance, including on hiring, discipline, terminations, and workplace investigations, in partnership with Human Resources.
Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial contracts and agreements supporting the business.
Monitor developments in franchise law, insurance regulation, and consumer protection law, and translate them into practical guidance for the business.
Provide strategic legal advice to executive leadership on new initiatives, products, and business strategies.
Experience and Education
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; active bar membership in good standing (Texas bar, or ability to obtain Texas bar admission/in-house counsel registration, required).
4-6 years of relevant legal experience, with substantial experience at a large or nationally/regionally recognized law firm.
In-house experience in litigation management, regulatory matters, commercial transactions, employment law, consumer protection, or corporate governance is a plus.
Experience with, or strong aptitude to quickly develop expertise in, franchise law, including franchise litigation and regulatory compliance (FDDs, state franchise registration and relationship laws).
Insurance industry experience, including familiarity with state insurance laws and licensing requirements, is a plus.
Required Skills and Abilities
Strong working knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to quickly master, franchise law, including litigation and regulatory compliance obligations under state franchise relationship and disclosure laws.
Solid understanding of state insurance laws and licensing requirements, or demonstrated ability to become proficient in this area.
Familiarity with consumer protection laws, including UDAP/UDAAP, the TCPA, deceptive trade practices statutes, and advertising and sales practices regulations.
Working knowledge of employment law fundamentals, including hiring, discipline, termination, and workplace investigation practices.
Demonstrated litigation management skills, including the ability to direct outside counsel efficiently and manage litigation budgets and outcomes.
Sound judgment and business acumen, with the ability to translate legal risk into clear, practical guidance for non-legal business partners.
Excellent analytical, negotiation, and written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with minimal supervision.
High degree of professionalism, integrity, and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters.
Collaborative, team-oriented approach, with the ability to build strong working relationships across Compliance, IT, HR, and business units.
