Job Summary:

The Controls Engineering Manager will lead our automation initiative and is responsible for developing and implementing automation strategies at the Allegany Plant in Cumberland, MD. The Controls Engineering Manager will be responsible for engineering, projects and systems to support the manufacturing operations in meeting and/or exceeding established goals. A key part of this role will be to install and commission a first of its kind progressive build cell and install future automation of the cell and the entire assembly process.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement automation strategies at the plant.
  • Identify areas where automation can improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Evaluate potential automation projects to determine priorities based upon technical feasibility and business needs
  • Partner with automation teams (corporate and plant) in the development and implementation of automation projects.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers, so that the company has a stable of external resources to draw upon as needed.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest automation technologies and trends and conduct feasibility studies on automation technologies to determine whether they will be useful in a given situation
  • Ensure that automation projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Support efforts by all members of American Woodmark to continuously improve departmental, location and company performance.

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively with customers/clients/providers in an effort to coordinate team activities to support meeting the business objectives.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, utilize process and value stream mapping, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must be able to prioritize multiple tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Basic knowledge of PLC programming and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with electrical, mechanical, and control systems principles.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering; advanced degree a plus
  • 5+ years of experience in automation.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment, particularly in automation or control systems, is highly desirable.
  • Completion of a variety of capital projects in an industrial setting
  • Demonstrated project management with complete project ownership
  • Experience managing external contractors on a project basis and internal maintenance staff in an indirect capacity for project support
  • Previous experience with complying with regulated environments (i.e. OSHA, EPA)
  • Proficiency in using tools and software related to engineering and control systems.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk in a shop floor environment, sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to lift 50 lbs on an occasional basis.
