Position Summary
The Controls Application Engineer supports the AMER DX / CW / EDGE product line by acting as the primary interface between customers, sales engineering, and the global Application team. The role focuses on ingesting AMER-specific requirements into the software application layer — generating ETO (Engineer-to-Order) configurations, creating Sequences of Operation (SOO) by request, and translating regional needs into Kanban initiatives for execution over global baselines.
Responsibilities
Customer & Sales Support
- Serve as the technical controls interface for AMER Sales Engineering and customers on PA product applications
- Respond to pre-sales technical inquiries regarding controls capabilities, communication protocols, BMS integration, and custom sequences
- Support bid/proposal activities with controls-specific technical content, SOO documentation, and application feasibility assessments
- Provide post-sales application support including commissioning guidance, controls configuration clarification, and field issue triage
- Interface with AMER Service for escalation resolution and field feedback loop
ETO Application Generation & SOO Creation
- Generate ETO software application variants based on customer-specific requirements (custom sequences, protocol configurations, I/O mapping, setpoint strategies)
- Create and maintain Sequences of Operation (SOO) documentation per customer/project request, ensuring alignment with the delivered application
- Validate ETO requests against platform capabilities and global baseline constraints
- Maintain ETO backlog visibility and delivery timelines in coordination with the Application team
Requirements Ingestion & Kanban Execution
- Capture recurring AMER market/customer requirements and translate them into structured Kanban initiatives for regional execution over the global PA baseline
- Distinguish between one-off ETO customizations and requirements warranting baseline integration
- Prioritize and groom the AMER PA Kanban backlog in collaboration with the Regional Controls Leader and Product Line
- Ensure traceability from customer/market request → Kanban card → implemented feature → validated release
- Participate in Kanban cadences (replenishment, delivery planning) to maintain flow and predictability
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Collaborate with the global Application team (EMEA) to ensure AMER regional initiatives integrate cleanly into the global PA baseline
- Interface with Product Management on feature prioritization and roadmap alignment
- Coordinate with Quality/Regulatory on documentation requirements for AMER-specific variants
- Support CRA compliance activities where AMER-manufactured PA units are destined for EU market
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- 3–5 years of experience in HVAC controls application engineering, preferably precision cooling/data center environments
- Experience generating ETO configurations or custom application variants for thermal/HVAC products
- Proficiency in structured text (IEC 61131-3) and/or C/C++
- Familiarity with BMS protocols (Modbus, BACnet, SNMP) and system integration
- Ability to create clear, customer-facing Sequences of Operation documentation
- Strong customer-facing communication skills — able to translate technical controls concepts for non-controls audiences
- US work authorization required
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Kanban/Agile delivery methodologies in an engineering context
- Knowledge of precision air conditioning systems and data center thermal management
- Familiarity with Vertiv controller platforms or equivalent
- Experience supporting sales engineering teams in a technical pre-sales capacity
- Understanding of UL, ASHRAE, and NIST frameworks relevant to data center cooling
- Prior experience in a global, matrixed engineering organization
Key Competencies
- Customer Orientation — Understands customer/sales urgency and delivers actionable technical support with appropriate responsiveness
- Requirements Translation — Converts customer requests and market signals into structured, executable Kanban initiatives
- ETO Discipline — Manages custom application delivery with rigor, balancing speed with baseline integrity
- Global-Local Balance — Injects AMER needs into the global baseline without fragmentation
- Communication — Bridges the gap between controls engineering depth and customer/sales accessibility
