Job Description

The Control Engineer is responsible for effectively designing, developing and implementing control systems for Generators that meet and/or exceed client, safety and regulatory requirements, to include but not limited to Paralleling Systems; Automatic Transfer Switches; Automatic Transfer Operations; PLC & HMI’s; and Protective Relaying. The Control Engineer will utilize programming and engineering principles to optimize efficiency, quality, and safety, often by troubleshooting issues and making improvements to existing systems through analysis and testing. This role requires a strong understanding of electrical engineering principles, automation technologies, and control system design, specifically in the context of switchgear applications. The incumbent in this position will be required to travel based on project scope.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

The following list of responsibilities is not all inclusive, additional projects and/or tasks may be assigned to meet operational needs. MCG retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position should operational needs warrant. 

System Design:

  • Design and develop control systems based on project requirements and timelines.
  • Develop control system architectures including hardware and software specifications for switchgear manufacturing processes, considering factors such as safety, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain HMI (Human Machine Interface) terminals for user interaction with controllers.
  • Integrate control systems for low and medium voltage switchgear.

Programming:

  • Write code for PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces) to control equipment and operations

Testing and debugging:

  • Conduct thorough testing to identify and resolve issues in the control system related to switchgear manufacturing.
  • Test and commission control systems to ensure proper functionality and compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Participate in the performance testing, commissioning, and startup of projects.

Documentation:

  • Create detailed documentation for control systems designs, including specifications, operating manuals, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Track modifications for future reference.

Miscellaneous:

  • Work closely with project management and engineering teams to ensure systems are designed and delivered correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Identify opportunities for automation solutions; develop and implement automation solutions to improve efficiency and productivity in manufacturing processes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Instrumentation or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in control system design and implementation, preferably in the switchgear industry.
  • Technical Knowledge – Ability to develop and design Low and Medium Voltage Switchgear, Generator and Automatic Transfer controls.
  • Generator controls (Woodward), single and paralleling systems
  • Automatic Transfer Switches
  • Automatic transfer operations (ATO)
  • GE, Siemens, Modicon - PLC/HMI knowledge
  • Protective relays – testing and programming
  • Satisfactory completion of additional background screening (if applicable).
  • Familiarity with PPE protocols and related electrical safety procedures.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in programming PLCs using ladder logic (LL), function block diagrams (FBD), and other applicable programming languages.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and drawings related to switchgear.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles, including circuit analysis, power systems, and motor control.
  • Ability to work efficiently in cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people with various levels of technical understanding.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of maintenance testing, medium and low voltage breakers, transformers
  • Self-Motivated and able to work and resolve issues both independently and in team setting as required.
  • Certified OSHA 10 required or OSHA 30 (preferred)

Skills Required
