PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

CPC Education and Career Services (ECS) provides dynamic programs and activities that bridge youth and adults with their highest educational, economic and leadership potential. ECS believes it is never too early or too late to start learning, which is why we use an asset-based approach to maximize clients’ current strengths. Whether in our schools, community centers, or internship sites, ECS creates equitable learning environments that promote leadership development, self-advocacy, and community building. Our programs equip clients with essential skills and experiences today so that they are empowered to take the next step tomorrow.

 

COMPASS Elementary: Department of Youth & Community Development/Comprehensive After School System (DYCD/COMPASS) provides youth after school services to school-age children ages 5-12 years old. COMPASS seeks to promote positive youth development, foster social and emotional skills, and encourage youth leadership through engaging activities that incorporate hands-on learning in safe, welcoming environments. The program includes academic support, physical exercise, and enrichment of age-appropriate activities such as literacy or STEM to enhance the academic, social, and physical development of children during the after-school hours and on certain school holidays.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Content Specialist will:

  • Select curricula and/or create/review lesson plans to ensure all activities have age-/developmentally-appropriate learning goals and/or skill gains and meet all DYCD required content parameters. Adapt curricula as needed to meet program goals and participants’ needs (e.g., the needs of English Language Learners and students with disabilities/IEPs).
  • Work alongside the Program Director to develop and implement engaging academic support, STEAM and literacy enrichment, life skills and/or leadership development, and physical fitness/healthy living activities to achieve DYCD goals while ensuring that SEL is embedded across all content areas/activities.
  • Assist the Program Director in maintaining accurate records of staff attendance and completion of required/recommended professional development/training.
  • Assist the Program Director in maintaining accurate records of participant attendance, engagement, and progress as well as family engagement and/or concerns.
  • Develop and maintain participants’ progress reports.
  • Attend meetings as required by funder and CPC.
  • Complete professional development (at least 129 hours annually for COMPASS Elementary)
  • as required by CPC and funding/regulatory agencies (e.g., DYCD, DOH, and SACC)
  • including, but not limited to, this required training:
  • 1-hour training provided by DYCD on mental health and mental illness, engagement and deescalation strategies, referral and crisis management protocols, and mental health resources.
  • Report to and fulfill other related duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required with a preference for a degree in education, social work, counseling,or a related field.
  • Teaching credentials and teaching experience or experience working with elementary or middle school youth in an afterschool classroom setting is preferred as these are assets crucial to a successful collaboration with the host school.
  • Current CPR/first aid/AED certification or willingness to complete this training/certification within 6 months of hire is required.

 

 

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong social and emotional maturity and behavioral management skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Fluency in Arabic and Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese) or Spanish preferred.
  • Must pass full background check that includes fingerprinting, SCR (Statewide Central Register), and DOHMH and PETS Clearance system.

 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS OVERVIEW

  • $23.00 - $30.00 per hour; 20-25 hours per week with occasional evenings and weekends
  • CPC offers eligible part-time staff members mandatory benefits, including paid New York State sick time
