Position Summary:

The Computer Aided Design (CAD) Drafter creates accurate 2D drawings, 3D models, fabrication drawings, and technical design documentation in support of MEI’s structural steel, custom fabrication, industrial equipment, machinery, and Millwright projects. This position works closely with project leadership, Fabricators, Welders, field crews, and other operational personnel to translate project specifications, field measurements, customer requirements, and existing conditions into practical design solutions and fabrication-ready drawings. The CAD Drafter supports projects throughout the design, fabrication, and installation lifecycle by performing field measurements, developing and revising designs, preparing technical documentation, and assisting with material selection, calculations, and design validation. This position requires strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, independent problem-solving, and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects through completion.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create accurate 2D drawings, 3D models, and fabrication designs using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and other applicable design software.
  • Develop shop, assembly, installation, and fabrication drawings, layouts, and bills of materials.
  • Design components and systems for structural steel, machinery platforms, mezzanines, conveyors, equipment supports, rigging fixtures, and other industrial applications.
  • Translate project specifications, sketches, field measurements, and customer requirements into practical and constructible design solutions.
  • Conduct field/site visits to obtain measurements, verify existing conditions, and gather information needed to develop or revise designs.
  • Develop and revise drawings based on field conditions, customer feedback, fabrication requirements, and project changes.
  • Perform or assist with design calculations, material selection, and design validation as required.
  • Review designs for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and alignment with project requirements.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Estimators, Fabricators, Welders, shop personnel, and field crews to support fabrication and installation needs.
  • Maintain drawing revisions, as-built drawings, bills of materials, and related project documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Independently manage assigned design projects, communicate technical information, and identify practical solutions to design or fabrication concerns.
  • Complete various special projects and tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Experience, Skills, and Education):

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical training or education in CAD Design, Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of relevant CAD design, mechanical design, drafting, fabrication, construction, or related experience required.
  • Experience or knowledge within steel fabrication, structural steel, industrial equipment, machinery, construction, Millwright, or similar environments required.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or comparable 2D and 3D design software; ability to learn additional programs as needed.
  • Ability to create and interpret 2D drawings, 3D models, fabrication/shop drawings, technical specifications, and bills of materials.
  • Working knowledge of welding symbols, structural steel detailing, fabrication methods, and industrial installation practices preferred.
  • Ability to accurately obtain and incorporate field measurements and existing site conditions into designs.
  • Strong computer aptitude, attention to detail, and analytical/problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to independently manage multiple projects through completion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with leadership, Fabricators, Welders, and field personnel.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a combination of office, fabrication/shop, construction, and customer or project-site environments. Work includes frequent use of a computer terminal with extended periods of sitting, frequent use of a keyboard and mouse, and use of standard office and design equipment.

The CAD Drafter will regularly perform work in non-temperature controlled, industrial, fabrication, and construction environments and may spend approximately 50% of working time at field or project locations, depending on business and project needs. Field work may require standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, and navigating uneven surfaces, stairs, ladders, elevated areas, and active industrial work environments while obtaining measurements and observing site conditions. Position may occasionally require lifting and carrying measuring equipment, tools, or other materials. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.
