Operation Smile is an international Non for profit organization that offers free surgeries to people born with cleft conditions. We envision a world in which health and dignity are improved through safe surgery. Founded in 1982, Operation Smile has had its presence in Ethiopia since 2005 with full blown programs in Jimma University Medical Centre in Jimma , St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa , Ayder Comprehensive Specialized hospital in Tigray and Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in Hawassa .Operation Smile Ethiopia is looking for Communication & Documentation intern that can work with the program teams in documenting, packaging and communicating promising practices and program results .This is a non-employment internship post based in Addis Ababa, Operation Smile Ethiopia Head Office.
Key Roles of the Intern
- Under the supervision of OSE Program Manager(PM), leads the overall documentation and communication process of OSE works done by the program team
- Prepare clear strategy and methods of documentation of OSE surgical, non-surgical comprehensive cleft care, medical education and other program activities implemented in the respective partner hospitals and at head office
- Closely work with Program Coordinators based in Jimma, Ayder, St.Pual’s and Hawassa hospitals to capture and gather best practices and program results for the routine activities that are done on the ground on regular basis through narration, case stories, pictures and videos as needed
- During Short term surgical program( STSP) or surgical campaigns, Surgical education programs( SEP),trainings, workshops and meetings, capture the events and its out puts ,do proper documentation using appropriate methods of documentation
- Together with Program Manager and consultation with Program Coordinators at each partner hospital, prepare quarter, semiannual and annual bulletin of key achievements of the country office
- Prepare short videos of key program outputs or promising practices of STSP,SEP or ongoing routine surgical and non-surgical comprehensive cleft care programs as well as investments done at partner hospitals
- Prepare regular updates of key successes across the different program areas and share with the program Manager on regular basis (monthly or twice per month)
- Prepare summary messages of key program outputs and successes following major activities such as STSP,SEP, trainings, workshops, hospital level investments and other programs and share with program manager for review and post on OSE social medias (Facebook and LinkedIn pages)
- Closely work with Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)Communication Manager and OSE Program Manager for posting of key program successes of OSE on the SSA social media.
- Execute any other activities assigned by immediate supervisor
Qualifications, Skills and Behaviors
- BA in journalism and communication, public relations and strategic communication, media and communication studies, linguistics, other social science, health science or relevant disciplines from recognized universities with zero year of experience
- Excellent communication skill both writing and speaking in English and Amharic languages. High knowledge of English is a must.
- Basic knowledge and skill of content production and editing of messages including videos
- Knowledge and practical use of social media in a positive manner
- Basic knowledge and skill of computers including Microsoft offices such as use of words, excel, internet, teams and financial tools.
- Motivated to work as intern as documentation and communication,
- Skill of coordination and team work
- Easily coachable and willing to learn
- Willing to work during working hours ;with flexibility of working out of regular work hours
Compensations
This is a temporary non-employment internship position where OSE will pay fair stipend as compensation of daily costs.The intern is responsible for bringing own functional laptop.
Skills Required
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism and communication, public relations, strategic communication, media and communication studies, linguistics, social science, health science, or a relevant discipline.
- Zero years of professional experience; internship applicants are eligible.
- Excellent written and spoken English and Amharic communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of content production and message editing, including video content.
- Knowledge and practical experience using social media positively.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, internet tools, Teams, and financial tools.
- Coordination and teamwork skills.
- Motivation to work as a documentation and communications intern.
- Willingness to learn and receive coaching.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including outside regular working hours when needed.
- Ability to provide a functional laptop.
