Job Summary
This position provides communications and content creation support, as well as on-site event support, for the UBC Public Humanities Hub. The Communications Assistant will have demonstrated interest and experience in digital content creation, new media, event promotions, social media, newsletters, website updates and accessible and inclusive communications. The main purpose of this role is to develop social media content, monthly newsletters, website content (primarily news items and event listings), public facing research materials, and print and digital assets. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, designer and editor with familiarity with copywriting across multiple platforms.
Organizational Status
Reports directly to the Arts Research Centres Administrator and works closely with the Public Humanities Hub Director, the Senior Program Assistant, and other hourly staff. The Comms Assistant may also work with the ASC Communications team to ensure adherence to Arts and UBC brand guidelines and communications best practices and to support a coordinated approach to the faculty-wide editorial strategy.
Work Performed
In consultation with the PHH Director and Senior Program Assistant:
- Designs and develops social media assets for event and internal awards promotion in accordance with UBC, Arts, and PHH visual identity and brand guidelines and communications best practices
- Assists in implementing internal and external-facing communications strategies (e.g. direct outreach, publicity campaigns, and reels)
- Updates social media accounts and coordinates social media campaigns in support of PHH events
- Coordinates internal UBC event publicity including digital signage, physical posters
- Creates content for, and publishes and distributes internal communications and newsletters in coordination with PHH Director and Senior Program Assistant
- Organizes and uploads event documentation to the PHH website
- Designs, develops, and edits online research modules incorporating documentation of PHH developed programming
- Maintains and updates PHH website, including supporting senior staff or a contractor in conducting a review of the website and migrating it to the new Arts Content Management System (e.g. identifying broken links, inventorying existing content).
- Provides general support for events, including promotion, setup, teardown, and post-event follow-up
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Must exercise judgment based on confidential and time-sensitive information. Errors in details of event times, locations, etc., may result in attendees missing events. Errors in judgment regarding photo permissions may result in breach of event attendees’ privacy. Errors or incorrect decisions can have significant adverse impact on all parties and the Public Humanities Hub’s reputation.
Supervision Received
The Communications Assistant reports directly to the Arts Research Centres Administrator, and works closely with the Public Humanities Hub Director and Senior Program Assistant.
Supervision Given
This role does not involve a supervisory component.
Minimum Qualifications
High School graduation, plus two years of post-secondary education, plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
