Function prerequisite:

The Communications Manager will lead the development and execution of communication strategies and plans across media, communications, and social media. The incumbent will work closely with MAD and DHC programs to ensure that impact stories from the field are adequately and consistently represented and amplified in key national and international media. The Comms Manager will also be involved in creating channels in LinkedIn, FB, and other SoMe, abiding by the Global Comms NPA protocols.

The Communications Manager will need to be a team player, working closely with Program Managers across departments, creating innovative ways to sensitize public opinion, and, most importantly, supporting fundraising directions led by the SMT and Country Director. The person would also sit in ESMT and will be accountable for all communication strategy deliverables.

The Comms Manager will not only have a large network of media outlets at the national, regional, and international levels, but will also proactively promote NPA work through networks that are more impactful for fundraising and for audience- and policy-change work.

The position is based in Kyiv with extensive travel to other NPA programme locations in Mykolaiv, Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro, Romny, and Sumy.

Responsibilities:

Specific duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive communication strategy for NPA Ukraine that encompasses the programs, values, and standards of NPA.
  • Create and develop innovative content on how to promote NPA Ukraine's work at all possible levels.
  • Develop and produce digital content, including photos and videos, and social media content in line with NPA’s Country Strategy and Comms strategies, to be published on NPA Ukraine channels and NPA main channels.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor communication campaigns, including on social media, in line with NPA guidelines and visual profile.
  • Manage and maintain NPA Ukraine’s public relations, social media accounts, and other channels.
  • Be responsible for creating media content (photo, video, and written) portraying and promoting NPA’s work and humanitarian impact in Ukraine.
  • Identify and write good case studies and communicate them through visual storytelling.
  • Arrange and facilitate field visits for journalists, photographers, and communications staff from NPA’s Head Office to NPA’s activities and field operations.
  • Conduct regular media analysis of the comms and social media outreach.  
  • Regularly report to CD and, as requested by CD, to the other bodies such as SMT on progress, results, and propose new communications ideas or approaches.
  • In coordination with the Programme Managers, liaise with NPA Marketing and Communication Department in Oslo on a regular basis.

Required qualifications:

Education:

Must have:

  • University Degree in Journalism, Mass Media, IR, or relevant field
  • Ability to train senior NPA staff on media skillsets such as interviews
  • Excellent networking abilities
  • Excellent English written and verbal skills.
  • Must be able to demonstrate strong writing and reporting skills.
  • Knowledge of Ukrainian and English language

Desirable:

  • Valid driving license, type B

Experience:

Must have:

  • At least 7 years of proven professional experience in the field of public relations, social media management, communication, and creation of media content.
  • Experience in management
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and monitoring media communication campaigns.
  • Experience as a journalist and/or communications professional with demonstrated experience in professional digital content production, including photos and videos.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to utilize amplifying messages.
  • Demonstrated experience in storytelling and talent for identifying good human impact case stories
  • Ability to plan and facilitate field visits by journalists and photographers to NPA’s activities and field operations.

Desirable:

  • Number of interviews with various media outlets.

Personal Competencies:

  • Strong writing and verbal communications skills.
  • Good cultural, networking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Structured, with excellent organizational skills with the ability to plan and coordinate activities often within tight deadlines in a harsh environment 
  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision
  • Ability and willingness to work and live under stressful and hazardous conditions

The Communications Manager is to abide by the policies and personal code of conduct by the Norwegian People’s Aid and represent the organisation in a loyal and responsible manner.

Willingness to travel at short notice, and often in difficult circumstances.
