The Principal Design Engineer leads the design, qualification, and lifecycle support of high-performance coaxial, twisted-pair, twinaxial, fiber-optic, Power over Ethernet (PoE), Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), Class 4 power, and hybrid cable products. This role converts customer and market requirements into reliable, manufacturable, standards-compliant solutions while partnering closely with Product Management, Applications Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, suppliers, and customers.

Essential ResponsibilitiesTransmission Cable Design & Product Development
  • Lead new product development and sustaining engineering projects for coaxial, twisted-pair, twinaxial, fiber-optic, power, and hybrid cable constructions.
  • Apply electromagnetic and optical transmission theory to conductor geometry, dielectric systems, shielding, cabling, fiber selection, and termination design.
  • Develop and validate designs through calculations, modeling, prototypes, design reviews, and laboratory testing.
  • Document design assumptions, risks, tolerances, and acceptance criteria.
  • Direct product development priorities aligned with business strategy and product roadmaps.
Standards, Compliance & Qualification
  • Design and qualify products to applicable TIA-568, ISO/IEC 11801, SPE, Industrial Ethernet, Telcordia, NEMA, ICEA, UL, and CSA requirements.
  • Support ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 systems, along with material-compliance obligations including RoHS, REACH, Proposition 65, PFAS, TSCA, CMRT, and EMRT.
  • Define qualification and production test methods, equipment, fixtures, sampling plans, and acceptance criteria.
  • Review industry codes and standards and represent MIEI at industry and agency meetings.
  • Support Marmon Electrical businesses in maintaining and developing industry standards.
Manufacturing, Suppliers & the 5Ms
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the transmission cable 5Ms:
    • Materials
    • Manufacturing Methods
    • Machines
    • Measurement/Certification
    • Manpower/Training
  • Partner with manufacturing facilities and suppliers to resolve material, equipment, process, testing, certification, quality, and performance issues.
  • Translate designs into manufacturable products, including process windows, inspection requirements, and testing criteria.
  • Support root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and CAPEX planning related to product design requirements.
Project Execution & Systems
  • Manage projects utilizing Stage-Gate/New Product Development processes and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Maintain accurate product information within CableBuilder, Smartsheet, Axiom, QCBD, ISOVISION, and other company systems.
  • Ensure specifications, drawings, test plans, and engineering changes are accurate, traceable, and released on schedule.
Customer, Technical & Organizational Support
  • Provide technical training related to cable construction and termination principles for internal teams and customers.
  • Support customer troubleshooting, technical reviews, product qualifications, and field issue resolution.
  • Assist with R&D planning and budget management aligned with strategic business initiatives.

Education & Experience

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in cable design, transmission-line/RF propagation, data communications, or fiber-optic product development.
  • Experience designing and qualifying cable products.
  • Experience interpreting specifications, engineering drawings, test data, and industry standards.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing operations, suppliers, engineering change control, Stage-Gate/NPD programs, and cross-functional teams.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic and optical transmission theory, RF theory, signal integrity, and cable materials/construction.
  • Familiarity with RF, high-speed data, and optical qualification and production testing methods.
  • Proficiency with engineering calculations, cable design software, laboratory tools, and modeling applications.
  • Ability to balance performance, compliance, manufacturability, quality, cost, reliability, schedule, and technical risk.
  • Strong written, verbal, project management, training, and cross-functional leadership skills.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with excellent judgment and attention to detail.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required.
