The Commercial E&S Underwriting Specialist is a hybrid role that balances hands‑on underwriting of complex submissions with broader responsibility for underwriting standards, coverage interpretation, form language, compliance considerations, and process improvement.

 In addition to underwriting individual accounts, this role partners closely with underwriting leadership, compliance, legal, and operations to refine underwriting practices, address regulatory considerations, and enhance underwriting tools, forms, and workflows.

This position is ideal for an underwriter with prior home office, technical underwriting, or product oversight experience who enjoys both executing at the policy level and influencing underwriting strategy, discipline, and execution across the organization.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Underwrite complex new and renewal risks within granted authority, including coverage structure, terms, conditions, and pricing.

  • Evaluate non‑standard, large, or unusual property and casualty risks to ensure alignment with underwriting appetite and portfolio objectives.

  • Serve as a technical underwriting resource, providing guidance on coverage interpretation, endorsements, and manuscript or non‑standard policy language.

  • Maintain and support underwriting guidelines, appetite statements, and authority frameworks to promote consistency and underwriting discipline.

  • Ensure compliance with surplus lines regulatory requirements and internal underwriting standards.

  • Collaborate with underwriting leadership and internal partners to support underwriting strategy, profitability, and risk governance.

  • Maintain effective broker/agency relationships focused on underwriting quality, clear communication, and disciplined execution.

  • Monitor market conditions, coverage trends, and emerging risks to inform underwriting decisions and guideline development.

  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of underwriting operations and portfolio objectives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, risk management, business, or a related field. Equivalent experience considered.

  • Minimum of 5+ years of Property & Casualty underwriting experience, with a strong preference for Excess & Surplus Lines and complex risk underwriting.

  • Demonstrated technical underwriting expertise, including coverage analysis and guideline interpretation.

  • Strong analytical, negotiation, communication, and decision‑making skills.

  • Working knowledge of surplus lines regulations and compliance considerations.

  • Professional designations preferred (CPCU, ASLI, AU, ARM, or similar).

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail and sound judgment.

  • Collaborative team player with a commitment to continuous improvement, professional development, and service excellence.
