Today, Clow Valve Company operates at two locations: Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Riverside, Calif. The Oskaloosa plants include iron and brass foundries, a machine shop, assembly, finished goods warehousing, shipping and administrative offices. The Riverside location includes a sales office and distribution center. We are proud to continue our history of offering manufactured products that comply with “Made in the USA” requirements.

Job Description

Purpose:

The Tooling Engineer proactively partners with both internal and external customers to understand all tooling demands and drives casting excellence by applying forward-thinking tooling technologies that ensure manufacturing excellence.

Key Performance Indicators:

Sustainability:

-98% of castings produced without tooling-related defects.

-Total hours of production downtime related to tooling failures per month.

Customer Experience:

-Establish appropriate average time to respond and support tooling-related production concerns.

-Establish appropriate average time from tooling request to release.

Core Functions:

Solutions and Innovation (40%): Studiously work with all customers to understand the tooling requirements. Utilize forward-thinking innovative technologies to design new tooling and/or improve current tooling to increase per-day mold yields and decrease scrap percentage. Develop trusting partnerships with tooling vendors to guarantee a cohesive relationship that maximizes industry knowledge and tooling accessibility. Consistently conduct feasibility studies, cost analysis, and risk assessments to accurately inform appropriate stakeholders of tooling opportunities. Diligently managing tooling projects from inception to fruition, guaranteeing project timelines are met and deviations are communicated.

Project Management (40%):Collaborate with other project leaders to diagnose and address tooling concerns that could contribute to casting defects, and support effective scheduling, planning, and prioritization processes by maintaining strong communication with all stakeholders.

Professional Development (20%): Initiate, identify, and facilitate innovative, feasible, and cost-effective improvements to propel manufacturing processes and design enhancements that position Clow Valve as a leader in the waterworks industry. Be a knowledge resource and mentor for the organization by actively seeking professional development opportunities that provide a thorough understanding of industry standards, customer specifications, manufacturing limitations, and compliance requirements.

 

Qualifications

Technical Skills:

-Proficient in Engineering principles and Foundry processes.

-Excellent written, verbal, and oral communication skills at all levels of knowledge.

-Proficient in 2D part print reading, 3D, GD&T, & PDM practices, including rigging and gating design, experience with solidification software.

-Self-motivated with attention to detail, ability to multitask/prioritize and solutions-oriented

-Defined knowledge of measurement techniques. Proficient in understanding tooling design safety and regulatory requirements

Education & Experience:

Required:

-Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Tooling Design, Mechanical Engineering, or Metallurgy with experience with tooling design.

-Or 5 – 7 years of experience in tooling design with foundry experience.

Preferred:

-Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Tooling Design, Mechanical Engineering, or Metallurgy with 5+ years of experience with tooling design and green sand foundry experience. 

-Proficiency with AutoCAD/Solid works and experience with lean manufacturing principles.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Tooling Design, Mechanical Engineering, or Metallurgy with tooling design experience
  • 5-7 years of tooling design experience with foundry experience (alternate to degree)
  • Proficient in engineering principles and foundry processes
  • Proficient in 2D part print reading, 3D CAD, GD&T, and PDM practices
  • Experience with rigging and gating design and solidification software
  • Defined knowledge of measurement techniques and tooling design safety/regulatory requirements
  • Excellent written, verbal, and oral communication skills
