The Role

Department: Information Technology

Reports To: IT Director / Risk Management & Security Officer

Location: Remote (U.S.-based)

Employment Eligibility: Must be authorized to work in the United States

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Cloud Database Administrator (DBA) to manage and optimize our cloud-based data platform, primarily built on Microsoft Azure.  This is a hands-on technical role reporting directly to the IT Director — responsible for ensuring our databases and data systems are secure, performant, automated, and compliant.

The ideal candidate is fluent in modern cloud data infrastructure, comfortable with SQL and big data ecosystems, and capable of integrating across Azure and AWS environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain Azure SQL Databases, Managed Instances, and related PaaS data services.
  • Implement and manage data security, encryption, and RBAC controls aligned with HIPAA, SOC2, and GDPR requirements.
  • Design and maintain disaster recovery, replication, and high availability strategies using Azure-native tools.
  • Build and automate operational workflows with PowerShell, Azure CLI, and CI/CD pipelines in DevOps.
  • Manage and orchestrate data pipelines using Azure Data Factory and Data Lake Storage for ingestion, transformation, and delivery.
  • Collaborate with development and analytics teams to optimize schemas, data models, and ETL/ELT processes for performance and scalability.
  • Integrate and support big data platforms such as Databricks, Apache Spark, Azure Synapse, and AWS Redshift (as applicable).
  • Support cross-cloud operations involving Azure and AWS services — including data migration, replication, and integration.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation, operational runbooks, and data governance policies.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience managing cloud database environments (Azure SQL, Managed Instances, or similar).
  • Strong proficiency in T-SQL, query optimization, and database performance tuning.
  • Experience with Azure Data Factory, Data Lake Storage, and Databricks.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell, Azure CLI, or similar automation frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of data security, encryption, RBAC, and compliance frameworks (HIPAA, SOC2, GDPR).
  • Familiarity with big data technologies such as Apache Spark, Synapse Analytics, Redshift, or EMR.
  • Experience implementing and managing CI/CD for data and database workflows using Azure DevOps or similar tools.
  • Working knowledge of Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and CloudWatch for performance monitoring and alerting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to AWS data services (RDS, Redshift, Glue, or Athena).
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) using ARM, Bicep, Terraform, or CloudFormation.
  • Understanding of data governance, metadata management, and lineage tracking tools.
  • Experience in data warehousing, ETL orchestration, or real-time analytics pipelines.
  • Prior work in regulated or healthcare environments under HIPAA or SOC2 compliance.

Compensation

Salary Range: $120,000 – $140,000
