Position Summary
The OT & PT clinical extern will be working in the capacity as an unregulated health care provider. Occupational Therapy / Physiotherapy clinical externs work in collaboration with the clinical team under direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed UHN Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist.
There are opportunities at a number of our sites and the successful candidate will be aligned to only one of these sites (Specifically: Toronto General, Toronto Rehab Bickle Centre, Toronto Rehab Lyndhurst Centre, Toronto Rehab University Centre, Toronto Western, West Park Healthcare Centre).
Externs will be hired on contract, working a minimum of 7.5 hours per week. The scheduling of these hours will be determined based on department needs, supervising therapist availability and may include weekday or weekend shifts.
Duties
- Supports provision of quality occupational therapy and/or physiotherapy services to patients at UHN within the framework of patient centered care
- Provides assistance during therapeutic sessions with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating as per the hospital policy.
- Assists in completing therapeutic tasks including cognitive therapy as well as exercise and walking program
- Cleans, checks, sets up and organizes equipment
- Communicates effectively with members of the interprofessional team
- Perform all other duties as required
- Must be an OT or PT student entering their 2nd year of an accredited training program.
- Previous hospital experience as an employee, learner or volunteer an asset
- Previous experience in clinical placement an asset
- Good problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Able to work independently and in a team
- Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job
