The Clinical Educator I supports the mission and organizational goals of We Are Sharing Hope SC (SHSC) through leading and directing functions that surround activities and responsibilities of clinical staff development. Responsible for collaborating with Clinical Services Department Leadership and the Training and the Professional Development Specialist to create, develop, and implement training for professional development, which supports and fosters staff knowledge, skill, and competency. Responsibilities also include ensuring clinical staff development needs are met through coaching and mentoring so their performance routinely meets or exceeds SHSC performance standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provides on-the-job training during real-time referral/case activity 8-10 days per month throughout the orientation period.
  2. Collaborates with Clinical Services Leadership, Training and the Professional Development Specialist, and Medical Directors to develop and maintain dynamic training and professional development programs focused on ensuring staff competency in core processes.
  3. Assists with development and delivering of new hire onboarding, as well as clinical training for new hires in the Clinical Services Department.
  4. Provides oversight of the Clinical Donation Coordinator (CDC) and Referral Triage Coordinator (RTC) preceptor programs in conjunction with the Clinical Services Department Leadership.
  5. Participates in the identification and training of clinical preceptors and provides back-up to clinical preceptors as needed.
  6. Facilitates case and experience debriefings with preceptors and trainees to monitor and document training progress completion.
  7. Meets with new orientees at least monthly, throughout the entire orientation process, to provide feedback on their overall performance, including what they are doing well and any areas for improvement.
  8. Conducts in-the-field observations and evaluations of clinical staff to assess their mastery of critical job skills and core competencies. Identifies opportunities for remedial training and/or continuous education. Field and desktop audits may be used to identify opportunities for improvement and ongoing training needs.
  9. Ensures ongoing clinical staff development to increase organ donation initiatives.
  10. In conjunction with clinical leadership, identifies opportunities for improvement and training.
  11. Assists with providing appropriate instructional methods such as individual training needs, group instruction, self-study, lectures, demonstrations, simulation exercises, role play, and computer-based training.
  12. Works with the Clinical Services Leadership to develop job aids, reference documents, testing and evaluation procedures, multimedia visual aids, and other educational materials for clinical staff.
  13. Proficient in creating, updating, and maintaining training documentation utilizing training software systems.
  14. Collaborates with Clinical Services Leadership and the Professional Development Specialist to determine appropriate annual competency training and associated methodologies each year. Assists with development and implementation of annual competency training that ensures compliance with SHSC and regulatory bodies’ continuing education requirements.
  15. Assists with updating and modifying training as needed to ensure compliance with changes to SHSC policies/procedures, AOPO standards, OPTN policies, and CMS regulations.
  16. Coordinates and leads process improvement and data development projects, including case reviews and research opportunities.
  17. Attends and contributes to in-hospital donor committee meetings and community events.
  18. Participates in regional/national professional organizations, which may include AOPO, NATCO, and UNOS.
  19. Performs other duties as requested by Clinical Services Department leadership, President and CEO and/or the SHSC Medical Director.
  20. Supports the CDC / RTC schedule as needed.
  21. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Qualifications, Education & Experience

Education: Associate degree or higher in nursing, respiratory therapy, paramedic medicine, related biological science (including transplant and donation science), or medical school degree (including foreign degree programs) required. Bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing, respiratory therapy, or related biological science preferred.
Experience: Minimum of three years of experience as OPO clinical coordinator with educator/preceptor experience preferred. Completes all necessary ongoing education requirements and maintains proficiency in the field.

Computer Skills: Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) required. Microsoft Outlook required. Electronic medical records (e.g., Cerner, Epic, Meditech) preferred.
Certificates & Licenses: Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) and Certified Transplant Preservationist (CTP) preferred.

Other Requirements: Ability to fulfill on-call obligations as needed; case work up to 24 consecutive hours.

Skills Required
