About this PositionWhat is the Texas Mutual Apprenticeship Program?
The Texas Mutual Apprenticeship Program is an official registered apprenticeship recognized by the Department of Labor (DOL). It is a two-year program that balances on-the-job learning at Texas Mutual with in-school classroom learning at Houston Community College (HCC). There is no cost for the apprenticeship program. It is included as a benefit of employment. Texas Mutual’s Claims Apprenticeship is a great opportunity for someone who would like to start a career with one of the Texas’ most successful insurance companies.
The Claims Assistant Apprentice is an entry level position that will attend classes and complete a specified number of hours of on-the-job training under close and direct supervision of skilled workers. During required training, the apprentice position will become familiar with the assigned claims assistant operations, policies, and procedures. Performs general claims-related clerical functions in accordance with the Texas Workers' Compensation Act, rules of the Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC), and internal policies and procedures. Provides a high level of customer service.

Combined 40 hours per week working at Texas Mutual and attending classes towards an AAS Business Management Degree at HCC.

Tuition and books financially covered while actively enrolled in the program

What to expect:
With support of management and your apprenticeship mentor, you will:
-
Learn the basics of workers' compensation insurance and its concepts by cross training with other departments,
-
Assist staff in preparing letters and forms, including required medical examination requests, peer review requests, designated doctor requests, mileage reimbursements requests, Division of Workers' Compensation records requests, medical records and attorney packets.

Support the Claims team by responding to customers.

Assist Claims Assistants and Adjusters with support activities, including importing and assigning documents to the appropriate claim files.

Develop technical knowledge and ability to utilize multiple computer systems (e.g. Microsoft suite, Guidewire) to conduct work daily

Complete the Texas Worker's Compensation licensing class and subsequent exam.
With progression through the apprenticeship program, you will learn to conduct claim investigations under direct supervision with support of your mentor, including:

Assist in evaluating and investigating claims for coverage and compensability.

Develop knowledge and the ability to recognize and assess issues that may affect claims handling, liability, coverage or damages and taking appropriate action as necessary.

Assist in thorough file documentation, including required data fields in claims system, and maintain diary notes to ensure completion of assignments.
Apprenticeship requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum age of 18

Acceptance into Houston Community College’s AAS Business Management program

Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA throughout the program

A willingness to learn and grow through both on-the-job training and college coursework

The base pay is based on the market evaluation of the job. Individual base pay is determined by a variety of factors, including experience, performance, education, and demonstration of skills and competencies required for each role.
