Chapter Lead - Identity Services

Full-time | Join our dynamic team in a senior engineering leadership role

Do the work that matters

CommBank invests in the latest AI technology stack across our ecosystems, giving our engineers modern tooling, platforms, and AI-enabled workflows to build with. You will work in an environment where AI-assisted engineering is part of how we design, deliver, and support software at scale.

See yourself in the team

We are seeking an experienced and driven professional to take on the role of Chapter Lead within our Identity Services team. In this pivotal role, you will combine strong leadership capability with a genuine understanding of technology to develop the capability of the engineers in your chapter, lift engineering standards, and drive strategic initiatives.

Leadership is the core of this role. You will spend your time coaching engineers, shaping engineering practices, and improving how work gets done. To lead with credibility, you will need working knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Entra, and modern authentication and authorisation protocols, along with a confident grasp of DevSecOps and pipeline development. Deep specialist mastery is not expected, but you do need to understand how the technology works well enough to guide and challenge your team. Hands-on contribution is a valuable supporting strength rather than the primary focus. Flexible working conditions and hybrid working arrangements are available.

Key Responsibilities

  • Chapter Leadership: Lead the chapter and develop the capability of its members, including hiring, onboarding, skill building, career development, coaching, and performance management.

  • Technical Leadership: Provide thought leadership and mentorship across identity services and modern engineering practices, guiding simple solutions to complex problems and the retirement of obsolete systems.

  • Engineering Practices and DevSecOps: Set and uplift engineering standards, embedding secure-by-design principles, test automation, and strong CI/CD and pipeline practice.

  • Automation and Continuous Improvement: Identify manual effort and process gaps, and sponsor automation that simplifies capability builds, onboarding patterns, and production support. Use data and feedback to inform metrics and improvement in partnership with the Chapter Area Lead.

  • AI-Enabled Engineering: Apply and promote AI tooling in solution design, development, testing, and operational analysis, guiding responsible adoption in line with organisational standards.

  • Strategic Delivery and Collaboration: Take technical ownership of key initiatives, supporting complex deliverables and solution planning, while collaborating across a team spread over multiple locations and time zones.

Technical Skills

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Entra (formerly Azure Active Directory), modern authentication and authorisation protocols, and general IAM principles. Depth is welcome, though a sound practical understanding matters most.

  • Strong DevSecOps understanding, with genuine confidence in CI/CD pipeline development and the integration of security and quality controls into delivery.

  • Sound grasp of contemporary engineering practices, including version control, code review, automated testing, and release management.

  • Demonstrated understanding of automation, with a track record of reducing manual effort across capability builds and production support.

  • Practical experience using AI tooling in the development of solutions.

  • Awareness of infrastructure as code and public cloud platforms is highly desirable; hands-on scripting or development capability is valued as a supporting strength.

Leadership Competencies

  • Matrix Management: Effectively manage resources and priorities across different functions and teams.

  • Coaching and Development: Provide effective feedback and coaching to build engineering depth within the chapter.

  • Persuading and Influencing: Use persuasion and influence to drive positive outcomes and resolve conflicts constructively.

  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Demonstrate flexibility in managing multiple priorities and changing environments.

  • Risk Management: Strive for better risk outcomes by integrating risk management principles into decision-making.
