JOB TITLE:  Cath Lab and PACU RN

DEPARTMENT: Cath Lab/Surgery Center

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: 

A nonexempt position responsible for all nursing care of Cath Lab/Surgery Center patients during all phases of their care-pre, intra and post procedure.  This position requires proficiency in technical skill as well as interpersonal relationship skills needed to maintain lasting and positive relationships with Alaska Heart Institute patients, families, physicians, and co-workers.  The ultimate goal of this position is to provide the highest level of quality patient care and customer service. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Responsible for all patient care, including Pre, Intra, and Post op care.
  • Preoperative care includes obtaining informed consent, labs, procedural orders, history and physicals, vital signs, preparation of invasive procedural site and EKG’s. 
  • Intra procedure includes circulating and monitoring. Alerting the physician to any changes in patient status. The administration of an oral or intravenous medication under the direction of the performing physician.
  • Assures safe radiation protection protocol.
  • Maintains good patient communication/rapport for comfort/status assessment and vital signs.
  • Post-operative includes assessment and documentation of information, vital signs, teaching, insertion site management and sheath removal. Use of vascular closure devices per department policy, applying vascular pressure, monitoring and alerting physician to changes, documenting and reporting to transferring nursing units.
  • Chart preparation for the next day with pre and post procedure phone calls. 
  • Preparation of sterile procedural setups. Adhering to sterile technique in all procedures. (patient, equipment and supplies)
  • Maintaining communication with family and/or significant other pre, during and post procedure with professional interactions.
  • Accurate patient positioning and assistance in selection of radiographic techniques for optimal visualization and minimal radiation exposure to patient staff and physicians.
  • Responsible for proper image acquisition, archival and image processing specific to procedure type.
  • Assures standard completion of patient/computer reports, calculations, and appropriate procedural charges.
  • Maintains professional training and continuing education as required by discipline. 
  • Promotes positive working relationships and “teamwork” concept within the department and throughout the organization.
  • Able to assist in minor troubleshooting of minor equipment repair in lab. Stocks supplies, instruments, and equipment according to storage allocations. Alerts and notifies manager of equipment/supply concerns or problems with operational performance.
  • Participates in QA program and daily equipment room checks.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff and education of students.
  • Responsible for the review and knowledge of Departmental polices and procedure guidelines, skills checklists, medications review, and safety and disaster guidelines annually performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health errors.
  • Respects patient’s confidentiality and right to privacy.
  • Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
  • Anticipates the needs of the physician.
  • Demonstrates ability to circulate all procedures in the Cardiac Cath Lab.  
  • Appropriately responds to a patient in an emergency or physically stressful situation.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationships with coworkers for the patient’s benefit.
  • Utilizes initiative, is self-motivated; manages time and activity effectively.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in activities as requested.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PAY RANGE: $45-51/hr to start (dependent upon experience).

Qualifications

EDUCATION:   Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE: Current licensure in the State of Alaska required.  Current BLS/ACLS certification required. 

EXPERIENCE:  At least one year of critical care experience.  Previous Cath Lab experience, with proficiency in EKG and hemodynamic interpretation.
