Your Opportunity

The Shopfront Youth Legal Centre is a free legal service for homeless/disadvantaged young people aged 25 and under. It is operated jointly by Mission Australia, The Salvation Army and the law firm Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer.

This role will provide client centered case work support to young people, mainly those who have mental health issues and/or cognitive impairments.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide case management for clients of The Shopfront, including but not limited to court support, report writing, implementing support plans for section 14 applicants.
  • Work collaboratively with legal and other staff of The Shopfront and other support services to ensure best practice interventions are provided
  • Actively participate and engage in interagency meetings, forums and contribute to the effective functioning and development of the service
  • Provide ad-hoc support and referrals to young people when needed
  • Develop quality relationships with a range of key external and internal stakeholders
  • In collaboration with the Principal Solicitor and the Team Leader, supervise students on placement with The Shopfront
  • Actively maintain systems and processes and support in a range of program activities including the completion of internal and external reports, statistics, feedback summaries and yearly outcomes.

Requirements for Success

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work or relevant qualification with minimum 1 year experience working with young people or 2 years of experience in another relevant field
  • Demonstrated ability to provide specialised or complex therapeutic interventions and manage a caseload of complex clients
  • Experience with clients dealing with issues including homelessness, poverty, abuse, mental health and knowledge of support services
  • Good working knowledge (or capacity to develop an understanding) of the criminal legal system
  • A commitment to advancing the rights of young people
  • Highly developed administrative skills along with well-developed written and oral communication
  • Driver’s licence desirable

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, WWCC and referee checks.
