General Summary

This position is responsible for overseeing capital projects (up to $40 million), including cost review, standardized project setup, and the design and construction of new materials facilities. It also leads teams in planning and building plant capital projects within the Materials Segment and supports the Operational Excellence initiative.

Essential Job Accountabilities

  • Establish consistent cost estimating, project scheduling, and construction practices across the Materials Segment to ensure timely and budget-compliant capital project delivery.
  • Review significant capital project cost estimates and create Self Constructed Asset (SCA) projects for approved estimates to ensure accurate forecasting, scheduling, and cost tracking.
  • Manage project estimates, resources, schedules, work plans, and overall construction management for Operational Excellence team-led projects to ensure budget compliance and timely completion, while monitoring progress and managing vendor contracts.
  • Provide field supervision and inspection services on construction projects, and perform post-project reviews to ensure key objectives, cost/performance improvements, and overall project goals are achieved.
  • Prepare bid packages for construction scope and equipment/materials procurement to ensure alignment with the directives of the Operational Excellence and Equipment Manager.
  • Provide regular project updates to stakeholders on budget, strategy, adjustments, and progress to ensure transparency and informed decision-making.
  • Collaborate with the automation team to ensure projects include hardware and software aligned with automation goals, assist in standardizing plant controls across the materials business, and provide schedule and cost perspectives for capital improvements to enhance efficiency and consistency.
  • Collaborate with Optimization Engineers to identify processing bottlenecks and necessary adjustments to meet productivity demands and adapt to changing field conditions, ensuring operational efficiency.
  • Mentor and support young engineers to foster their development into future operations experts and leaders, ensuring the growth and sustainability of our talent pipeline.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Engineering or equivalent work experience preferred.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 10 to 15 years’ experience in a mining and material processing environment.
  • Strong preference for 10+ years estimating and project management experience.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • General knowledge of the construction materials business.
  • Knowledge and experience with Hot Mix Asphalt, mining, and Aggregate Plants.
  • Must have demonstrated decision making skills and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in high production environment.
  • Advanced mechanical knowledge of construction material processing plants and heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to respond quickly and effectively under pressure and deadlines.
  • Must have strong computer skills.
  • Must have strong estimating and scheduling skills.
