Job Summary

Reporting to the Africa Region (AR) Head of Capital Management will be responsible for for managing capital planning, reporting, and optimisation as well as alignment with Group Treasury and regulatory requirements in AR which spans 10 subsidiaries in 9 markets across Africa.
The role is responsible for enabling effective capital planning, monitoring, reporting and optimisation to ensure sustainable capital adequacy, efficient balance sheet utilisation and alignment with Group Treasury, Finance, Risk and regulatory requirements.
The incumbent will provide analytical insight and challenge to Entity capital plans, monitor capital performance against approved targets and risk appetite, support shareholder value optimisation through dividend and recapitalisation activities, and produce management information that facilitates proactive capital decision-making. The role will work closely with Country Treasuries, Finance teams, Group Treasury and Risk functions to enhance capital resilience and returns across AR entities.

Job Description

Capital Planning, Monitoring and Reporting

  • Review and challenge Entity capital plans, escalating material movements, emerging risks and potential capital adequacy concerns to the AR Head of Capital Management.
  • Consolidate and aggregate subsidiary capital plans for monthly actual reporting and forecasting cycles.
  • Produce monthly management information and analytics supporting capital adequacy monitoring and proactive management of AR entity capital positions.
  • Monitor entity capital utilisation against approved targets, limits and strategic plans.
  • Monitor and report AR entity capital use, returns profiles and performance against approved plans.
  • Highlight material variances to plan and recommend corrective actions where required.
  • Prepare and present capital management reports for AR Treasury Committee, Group Treasury Committee, Group Risk and Capital Management Committee and other governance forums.
  • Maintain accurate capital management reporting, dashboards and analysis using approved management information tools.

Capital Adequacy and Risk Management

  • Support the maintenance of robust capital plans across AR subsidiaries to ensure compliance with regulatory and internal capital requirements.
  • Monitor capital adequacy positions and emerging risks impacting subsidiary capital resilience.
  • Escalate capital excesses, deteriorating capital positions or inefficient capital deployment to the AR Head of Capital Management.
  • Support engagement with Country ALCOs to improve capital management discipline and strengthen entity returns.
  • Review and recommend approval or objection of Single Borrower Limit (SBL) excess requests, ensuring alignment with Group policies, risk appetite and regulatory expectations.
  • Monitor foreign currency risks impacting subsidiary capital positions and provide analysis on vulnerabilities and mitigating actions.
  • Facilitate and provide SME support for the review and challenge of Country ICAAPs, Recovery and Resolution Planning (RRP), annual stress testing, and ACS buffer-setting activities to ensure robust governance, regulatory compliance, and sound risk management practices.

Shareholder Value and Capital Optimisation

  • Ensure AR entities operate in compliance with the Group Dividend Policy.
  • Manage dividend payment timelines, approvals and cashflow coordination to support shareholder value objectives and Absa South Africa hedging requirements.
  • Review and recommend approval or objection to the retention of surplus capital within AR subsidiaries, balancing growth requirements, capital efficiency and shareholder returns.
  • Support recapitalisation activities through capital instruments, equity injections and related approvals.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations aimed at improving return on equity, capital efficiency and balance sheet optimisation across AR entities.
  • Conduct peer analysis and benchmarking to assess capital resilience, returns performance and opportunities for optimisation.

Cost of Equity and Returns Management

  • Coordinate the setting of Cost of Equity (CoE) for AR entities on at least a semi-annual basis.
  • Ensure alignment and interlock with the Group Cost of Equity setting process and related governance requirements.
  • Monitor entity returns relative to Cost of Equity hurdles and provide insights on performance improvement opportunities.
  • Support the assessment of subsidiary performance against return expectations and capital allocation objectives.

Regulatory Capital Management

  • Collaborate with Group Regulatory Reporting teams to finalise regulatory capital submissions and management reporting.
  • Manage regulatory reporting processes during critical reporting cycles, including reconciliation and sign-off activities.
  • Oversee reporting accountability for capital-related regulatory returns, including BA610 capital reporting requirements.
  • Ensure consistency between regulatory submissions, management reporting and capital planning outputs.

Business Partnering and Governance

  • Build strong relationships with Country Treasury, Finance, Risk and Business stakeholders to support effective capital management.
  • Support in-country ALCOs through the provision of capital analytics, insights and recommendations.
  • Foster a strong culture of capital management discipline across AR entities.
  • Ensure timely escalation of material capital risks, breaches, inefficiencies and emerging issues.
  • Contribute to the continuous enhancement of capital management frameworks, methodologies and reporting capabilities.

Education and Experience Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Actuarial Science, Mathematics or related quantitative discipline.

  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in Banking, Treasury, Capital Management, Finance or Regulatory Reporting.
  • Strong understanding of Basel capital frameworks and banking regulations.
  • Experience in management reporting, forecasting and financial analysis.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint and management information tools.
  • Experience engaging with senior stakeholders and governance committees.
  • Understanding of banking operating structures, capital allocation and financial resource management.

Education
